Members to continue conveying our concerns (sent

Congress.

24AFDO members continue to be involved Food
Agricultural Sector Government Coordinating
Council (FASGCC) since 2004 working with DHS,
AFDO joins 12 reps from federal, state, local
government. Council of Presidents of State
Associations developed from FDAs Food Security
Surveillance Assignments. The goal is to
integrate food safety and defense. Safety of
Fresh Produce Working Group Developed based on
a request from the tomato industry. The goal is
to provide mandatory regulation in the absence
of federal rules. AFDO is to provide model code
for all produce industry. This is a work in
progress. ORA Revitalization and other

Successful grants/ cooperative agreements
- 1) Tracking the Food Code a contract with FDA to
track the adoption of the Food Code. -
Status of Food Code adoptions can be found at
FDA/CFSAN website Many states have adopted the
Food Code.

2) CDC States Helping States
- Cooperative Agreement with CDC to
- strengthen state and local food safety programs.
Based on this agreement, the Food Emergency
Pocket Guide was developed. This is a
comprehensive durable field manual for use by
field staff in emergencies.

3) Control of Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) at
Retail
- Funded through a cooperative agreement with
USDA. Objectives include - The development of a model response strategy to
employ when encountering positive samples of Lm
in retail environments - Development of educational materials in both
English and Spanish available on the AFDO website
(DVD and booklet also available now)

- AFDOs Position Statement on Smoke Free Food
Establishments
- AFDO supports no smoking in all regulated food
facilities regardless of size or location - Employee smoking in food establishments or
returning to food-handling activities after
smoking may result in the contamination of
exposed food clean equipment, utensils, and
linens or other items needing protection. The
Federal model Food Code, adopted by most states,
prohibits smoking by employees in food
preparation areas because of the potential that
hands, food, and food-contact surfaces may become
contaminated.
