NGIS/ACE

• The NGIS and ACE are two distinct projects and
  should not be confused with each other.

NGIS Next Generation Interconnect System

• The current Satellite transponder lease runs
  through October 2006
• A notice of Intent is due October 2004
• Estimated cost is 177 million
• Congress has approved 10 million

NGIS Next Generation Interconnect System

• The NGIS technology will be IP Video over
  Satellite
• There has been a prototype project NGISp, with
  good results
• The question has not been will it work but
  will it scale
• The prototype system is still running and
  improving

NGIS Next Generation Interconnect System

• Video will be delivered via satellite to your
  server as a video file
• Satellite will provide real time live programs
  when needed
• Need for time zone delays nearly eliminated
• Reduction in transponder time
• Other applications (Emergency Alert System)

ACE

• ACE may or may not be an an acronym
• ACE is a fully integrated and automated master
  control system
• All NRT programs will be delivered by the NGIS to
  the station servers
• ACE will be deployed by PBS as part of the NOC
  redesign

• Because the PBS/NOC is a multi-channel
  environment all services will be automatically
  monitored
• To insure integration PBS created a small
  consortium of vendors to work on this project
• Broadview is the software that will replace NOLA

• Stations may wish to purchase Broadview as their
  local traffic management system
• Or, they may purchase the entire ACE package and
  be hosted on a centralized database at PBS

• The station then keeps all its local and national
  video on its server and sends the metadata to PBS
• The metadata becomes a log which is used to
  initiate the program play lists from the server
  at the station
• Performance is monitored at PBS

• NGIS is our new server based delivery system
• ACE is an automated master control option offered
  by PBS
• Both will change your lives as programmers
