Youth Crime In Easterhouse

2
Reasons for crime
  • Poverty
  • Deprivation
  • Drugs
  • Alcohol
  • Gangs
  • Peer pressure

3
Poverty
  • Poverty is a major factor in crime
  • The main problem is that it is a vicious circle
  • If you are brought up in a family that is living
in poverty it is very hard to break the mould
  • In Easterhouse there are council estates where
there are many families living in poverty

4
Deprivation
  • Referring back to poverty in Easterhouse
  • Deprivation is also a big problem which leads to
people especially teenagers turning to petty
crime such as shoplifting to get the latest
mobile phone or the latest fashion
  • Ect . . . . . . . .

5
Drugs(page 1)
  • Drugs is also a problem
  • Especially with the young community
  • The drugs problem is manly caused by curiosity
    and boredom
  • Teenagers will just try anything if it is
exciting and unfortunately drugs falls under that
    category

6
Drugs (page 2)
  • As a result of the rise in teenage misuse of
drugs the crime figures have increased on crimes
    such as theft
  • This is due to offenders stealing to pay for
there very expensive habit and with many users
already living in poverty this is there only way
    of getter there next Hit

7
Alcohol(page 1)
  • Alcohol is a major problem across Scotland not
    just in Easterhouse
  • This has also sparked off a big problem with
    underage drinking
  • In Easterhouse there are many off-licences within
the estates and so there is a greater temptation
    to drink
  • Many of the youth simply get older
brother/sisters or friends to buy them drink

8
Alcohol (page 2)
  • Once the teenagers have the drink they usually
consume it on street corners on in parks
  • This may end up with the offenders being issued
with ASBOs ( Anti Social Behaviour Orders)
  • This then means they have a criminal record which
as a result starts the vicious circle again
because having a record may mean they will find
it hard to get a good job and earn money

9
What is a ASBOs?
  • An ASBO is a Anti Social Behaviour Order
  • You can be given an ASBO under the grounds of
    Loitering
  • Underage drinking
  • Vandalism
  • Breech of the Pease
  • As well as many other offences
  • In easterhouse there is a high number of youths
    with these orders

10
In Conclusion
  • The current situation in Easterhouse is getting
better but there is still is a lot to do
  • The government are trying to tackle this problem
not just in Easterhouse but across Scotland
  • By implementing measures such as community
wardens which has been piloted in Scotland
  • Where these officers have been put in place the
figures on crime have decreased by 15 which has
to be a step in the right direction!
