Title: ScoobyDoo and the Halloween Mystery
1Scooby-Doo and the Halloween Mystery
2Chapter One
- It was Halloween night and Scooby and the gang
were off to a friends house for a spooky
Halloween party. Shaggy was in charge of getting
the Halloween costumes. There were five skeleton
costumes, two ghosts costumes and three vampire
costumes. Using the INDIRECT METHOD, how many
ways can Shaggy choose three pieces of costumes
if he wants to include some vampire costumes? - Total Unrestricted Total No Vampire
- 120-35
- 85
3Chapter Two
- Before the Halloween party, Shaggy had to
finish up his math homework. He was having a very
difficult time. Velma offered to help him with
the work, and Shaggy gratefully accepted. Shaggy
explained that he didnt understand PASCALS
TRIANGLE. Oh thats so easy said Velma, Here
let me show you
4Chapter Three
- After Shaggy got the costumes and math help from
Velma they wanted to stop for some dinner before
the Halloween party. They stopped at their
favorite burger joint. If Scooby had a 0.5 chance
of ordering a burger, a 0.2 chance of ordering a
soda and 0.7 change of getting them both in a
combo, are these EVENTS MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE. Solve
by using the ADDITIVE COUNTING
PRINCIPLE. - Therefore they are mutually exclusive
5Chapter Four
- After they ate dinner they were off to the
party! Unfortunately, on the way to the party
their car broke down. It was fortunate that there
was a house near by, a big old scary one. They
saw others near by but this house was the closest
and they really wanted to get their car fixed as
soon as they could. The only way to get their car
fixed was to go inside and ask if they had a
phone they could use. -
- In the rural area they were in, they had already
past 20 houses. They know that 17 of those 20
houses have a telephone. If they past 3 houses
already that they know had a phone, what are the
chances that this big, old spooky house will have
a phone? Use THEROTICAL PROBABILITY to solve
this.
6Chapter Five
- Scooby and the gang entered the house. When
they were walking to the front door, a man
stopped them. WHO GOES THERE!? the man yelled.
This frightened Scooby and Shaggy especially, who
ran away but ran into the man instead. - Were sorry, please dont hurt us! they
begged. - Im not going to hurt you, what do you want?
the old man asked them. - We just need a phone, do you have one? Shaggy
replied. - Yes, yes, come on in, the man said as he
motioned them to follow him inside. Once inside
the man showed them to the phone. Scooby and
Shaggy were sent to find the mechanics phone
number. - Where to start?! asked Shaggy.
- I say we just guess, its a whole lot easier!
Scooby suggested - Great idea Scoob! I knew you would come up
with something! -
If the telephone number has 7 digits how many
possible numbers are there? Use the FUNDAMENTAL
COUNTING PRINCIPLE to solve. 9 x 10 x 10 x 10
x 10 x 10 x 10 9 000 000
There were too many different possibilities, so
luckily Shaggy found a telephone book. They
called the car mechanic and waited while he came.
While they were waiting Shaggy decided he wanted
some Scooby-Snacks so, he had a contest with
Scooby.
7Chapter Six
- If Shaggy and Scooby were to throw Scooby-Snacks
in their mouth, there is a 1/4 that they will get
the snacks in, and a 3/4 that they will miss. If
they were to try and catch 3 snacks, what are the
chances that they will get an OUTCOME of at least
2 in? Use a TREE DIAGRAM and EXPERIMENTAL
PROBABILITY to solve. After you have done this,
do an EXPERIMENT to see if you answers match up.
8Chapter Seven
- Once the Scooby-Snacks were done, they headed
to the car to wait for the mechanic. As they
approached the car something didnt seem right.
Someone had broken into their car! - What are we going to do!? Velma asked.
- Well looks like we have a mystery on our
hands, Freddie told them. Just as he said that,
everyone started thinking who could of done that. - The old man must know something he is the
only one that we saw here! Daphne remarked.
Lets go and ask him. They went to find him and
ask him what he saw. -
Well, there had been some mysterious things
going on recently. Windows broken and some of my
things have gone missing. One night I woke up to
this thing, a creature that seemed to have a
pumpkin as a head! Strangest thing I have ever
seen, and I think that creature is the
explanations of what has been going on around
here. He always wears the same thing, jeans and a
yellow shirt with the pumpkin head. the old man
told them.
9Chapter Continued..
In the town they are in there is a total of 150
people. That night, 70 of them had pumpkins on
their porches they could have used as a head and
73 of them own jeans. 24 of them had pumpkins and
jeans, 38 of them had yellow shirts and jeans, 24
have pumpkins and yellow shirts and 15 own all
three. Solve using VENN DIAGRAM to see how many
people in the town just have yellow shirts?
How many people own jeans INDEPENDENTLY?
26 How many people are DEPENDENT on jeans with
their yellow shorts? 23
40 people only own yellow shirts.
10Chapter Eight
Scooby and the gang then went back into the
house to search for more clues. When they went
inside, they met someone new. His name was George
and he lived in the house next door. I heard
some weird noises and came inside to see if I
could find anything, George told them when they
asked him what he was doing. George was wearing a
yellow shirt, which means he could have been a
suspect. I think we need to find some more
clues, Freddie said to them, Lets split up,
Shaggy and Scooby go together and Daphne and
Velma, youre with me. With that, they all went
their ways, to try and find more clues.
11Chapter Continued..
Scooby, whats that?! Looks like our
Scooby-Snacks! Shaggy said to Scooby. They went
over to where they saw the crumbs of the
Scooby-Snacks. The crumbs went into three
different rooms. Find the room that the monster
is in using SUBSETS. Use this formula to color in
the SAMPLE SPACE, the one that isnt colored in,
is the room that Scooby and Shaggy are going to
search first.
Are these events mutually exclusive? They are
NON MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE because they share
elements.
12Chapter Nine
In the room they found a pumpkin! It was carves
and looked like someone may have been wearing it
on their head. Scooby and Shaggy went to have a
closer look. Look Scooby! There is some brown
hair in here! Shaggy told Scooby. Well the
only one who has brown hair is George! Scooby
told Shaggy. Then he must be the Pumpkin head!
Shaggy announced, Lets go and tell the rest of
the gang we solved the mystery!
13Chapter Continued..
Back with Freddie, Daphne and Velma they werent
finding much of anything. However, all of a
sudden they saw a shadow, and it looked like it
was someone hiding behind the curtain. As Velma
approached a man stepped out form behind the
curtain. Please dont hurt me! the man said.
He had brown hair and was wearing a yellow shirt
and jeans. This meant that he was a suspect as
well, and his hiding didnt help that much.
Who are you? asked Daphne, And why are you
hiding? Im Frankie and I was just looking
around this house, cause I want to buy it. I got
scared when I heard your voices so I hid.
This house isnt even for sale, why didnt you
just ask to see it? asked Velma. Because I um,
well, I dont know, stated Frankie. Just then
Scooby and Shaggy ran into the room. WE FIGURE
IT OUT ITS GEORGE! HE IS THE PUMPKIN HEAD! WE
FOUND A PUMPKIN WITH BROWN HAIRS IN IT! shouted
Scooby and Shaggy together. Not so fast guys,
looks like we have a new suspect on our hands,
Freddie said, just then he turned around to look
at Frankie and he was gone! They chased after
him, hoping to get him and figure out why he
would run away. Before they knew it, they saw
Pumpkin Head himself! They quickly chased after
him and cornered him in the hallway. Scooby was
running so fast that he couldnt stop! He ended
up crashing right into Pumpkin Head himself.
Velma went over to take the pumpkin off to see
who the culprit really was. Lets see who it
is! Velma shouted as she removed the pumpkin.
And sure enough, it was Frankie. All the clues
lead to you, there was no chance of getting away
from us! YAY! Now we can finally go to out
Halloween party! The gang shouted. Tell us
where our van is so we can get out of here!
Shaggy ordered Frankie.
14What is the probability of getting the right room
and finding the Mystery Machine?
What is the probability of getting the right room
and finding the Mystery Machine?
Chapter Ten
The gang found that the mystery machine was in a
room around the house. The rooms that it could be
in were the kitchen, living room, bedroom, barn,
dining room, garage or basement. If you only
choose 4 of these rooms, how many COMBINATIONS of
rooms can you check?
What is the probability of getting the right room
and finding the Mystery Machine?
15Chapter Eleven
Once they found that the Pumpkin Head, he made a
plea that he would return everything to their
rightful owners if they let him go. That
doesnt seem to fair, Freddie announced, You
took everything from the innocent people you
deserve to be punished! Well, I have an idea!
Velma said, What if he were to roll a dice and
draw a card from a deck. If he rolls a five and
gets a 5 from the deck, we can set him
free. Thats a great idea, it will never
happen, what are the odds! Daphne said.
Find the odds of this happening using CONDITIONAL
PROBABILTIY
16Chapter Twelve
Once the mystery was solved, the gang lined up
and got ready to go back into the Mystery
Machine. When they went to line up Scooby said he
must be beside Shaggy. How many different ways
can they line up if there is all five of the
gang? (Freddie, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy and
Scooby.) Use PERMUTAIONS to help you solve.
Shaggy Scooby ____ _ _____ _____ ____ _ Shaggy
Scooby _____ _____ ____ _ _____ Shaggy Scooby
_____ ____ _ _____ _____ Shaggy Scooby
17Chapter Thirteen
- The gang was so happy that this mystery was
finally over and they could go and enjoy their
spooky Halloween night.
