Brief Introduction
  • Adnan was Malayan soldier.
  • He fought the Japanese in World War 2.
  • He is regarded a hero by the Singaporeans and the
    Malaysians.
  • He led a strong Malay soldiers from the Malay
    Regiments to fight the Japanese.
  • They had fought on Pasir Panjang Ridge on Bukit
    Chandu.

Lets go deeper into his life
  • Adnan Saidi was born on the year 1915 and passed
    away on the year 1942.
  • He was born at Kajang, Selangor. He was the
    eldest in the family, his two siblings, Ahmad
    Saidi and Amarullah Saidi were both soldiers.
  • He married Sophia Pakir, an Islamic religious
    teacher who passed away1949.
  • They have 2 sons and a daughter, but their
    daughter died soon after birth.
  • Ahmad was killed in action after his ship, the
    HMS Pelanduk, was sunk by the Japanese which was
    going to Australia.

The Battle
  • Adnan Saidi led a strong platoon from the Malay
    Regiment which consists of 42 people.
  • They fought at Pasir Panjang Ridge at Bukit
    Chandu.
  • Although they were heavily outnumbered, they
    refused to surrender until the end.
  • He was shot but he carried on fighting the
    Japanese.
  • After the battle was lost, the Japanese took
    Adnan Saidi as a prisoner and tied to the rubber
    tree where he bayoneted to death.

Memories
  • At the Kent Ridge Park which is near the site of
    the battle now bears a plaque of Adnan Saidi to
    commemorate him.
  • A museum at Bukit Chandu was built to remember
    the bravery of the Malay Regiment soldiers.
  • The regiment would later be known as the Royal
    Malay Regiment.
