Title: WHAT IS OMUN

1
WHAT IS OMUN?
2
WHAT IS OMUN?
  • It is a Fake or Model version of the real
    United Nations.
  • The United Nations is a true organization in the
world made up of almost 200 countries!
  • Its purpose is to keep peace and security around
the world. It also prides itself on solving
economic, social and humanitarian problems in
    countries across the globe.
  • Countries involved in the United Nations try to
help each other out with whatever major problems
    are occuring.

3
WHAT IS OMUN?
  • It is a 3-day process that takes place one
weekend in February in Downtown Columbus.
  • Students are grouped into teams, serving as
    Delegates, or selected members representing
    certain countries.
  • These Delegates are experts about the country
and present to the entire United Nations a
problem in their country and how they would like
    the problem resolved.

4
WHAT IS OMUN?
  • Students are not just involved in presenting a
    problem from there nations.
  • Each Delegate (student) is then able to write,
present, and debate issues that affect nations
    all over the world!
  • Students can also present a culture-based talent
from their country, and participate in contests
    (Peace Keeping, Current Events, etc.)

5
WHAT IS OMUN?
  • OMUN, also referred to as Model UN, is a great
    way to
  • Learn about cultures and peoples of other nations
  • Debate current global issues and world problems
  • Become a better team player and researcher
  • Practice and learn leadership skills

6
WHAT IS OMUN?
  • How Does Model UN Work?
  • All those joining the club will be divided into
smaller teams (usually between 5-8 people)
  • We meet once a week after school (generally on
    Wednesdays)
  • The majority of Model UN is spent doing research
in order to be an Expert about your groups
    particular country.
  • You have to do the hard work in order to get to
    the fun stuff!

7
WHAT IS OMUN?
  • Once Research has been conducted for your
country, you will try and determine what problem
in your country you would like to try and fix.
  • Teams write a RESOLUTION stating what the problem
is and how they would like the United Nations to
    help in solving the problem.

8
WHAT IS OMUN?
  • Once a Resolution has been turned in, its time
to move on to the next step.
  • Several group members are then chosen as the
speakers to present the Authors Speech (version
based on the Resolution) to the entire United
    Nations delegates.
  • After these steps are completed, a talent
representing that countrys culture is also
developed and native costumes are created.

9
What can I expect OMUN weekend?
  • We will stay after school that Friday and eat a
    meal together.
  • The students will ride a bus, boarding at approx.
400 to go to the Hyatt.
  • We will check into the hotel and immediately
    change into our costumes.
  • Friday night the countries are broken into
smaller rooms in Council Sessions. This is so
everyone has a chance to present in a smaller
    audience.

10
What can I expect OMUN weekend?
  • During Council Session, the president and
    vice-president are grading authors speech
presentations to determine who may overall be
chosen to present in the General Assembly on
    Saturday.
  • They are looking for well-researched, detailed,
    hot-topic, highly debatable, interesting, and
    unique topics.

11
What can I expect OMUN weekend?
  • At the end of Council Session, officer candidates
will be coming in to each room giving speeches on
who they are and why they want to hold a
    particular office.
  • Each country will be voting on officers (General
    Assembly President, Vice-President, Sect.
General, and Council Session pres. and
    vice-pres.) on Saturday evening.

12
  • Saturday will begin in the ballroom for the
opening ceremonies of the General Assembly where
They will announce which resolution numbers have
gone on to present in the ballroom and in which
Council Session (time) those resolutions will
    present.
  • The majority of Saturday then is authors
speeches, debates, and people leaving to
participate in individual contests (Peace Essay,
    Current Events, etc.)
  • There is an International Summit held on Saturday
evening where the current State of the World is
addressed. It is probably one of the neatest,
most rememberable experiences of the weekend.

13
What can I expect OMUN weekend?
  • Saturday evening includes some rest and fun for
the kids, with a dance provided by the staff,
chaperoned by the high school staff and adult
    chaperones from the other schools.
  • The advisors do meet with all of the kids each
night to determine when well be going to
breakfast and re-cap/congratulate the students on
    their accomplishments for the day.
  • Sunday is simply a nice awards ceremony and
    dismissal.

14
WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT JOINING MODEL UN?
  • 1. It is very time consuming, and most of the
    work is done after school.
  • 2. It does cost money (a little over 100). We
will do some type of fund raiser, and it will not
    all be due at once.
  • 3. You must have an approved, parent signed
application. Depending on the number of
applicants, we may not accept everyone into the
club, so use your best answers on the
    application.
  • 4. You are expected to maintain good grades (at
least a C average in all classes).
  • 5. Lots of parent support is strongly encouraged
    and certainly welcomed.
