  • SYSTEMS OF MEASUREMENT

For military use, direction is expressed as units
of angular measure from a Base Line. There are
two systems of measurement used by the military
8
  • The most common measure is
  • DEGREES

9
  • Another less used system of measure is
  • MILS

10
BASELINES
The three types of north are the baselines when
measuring angles.
11
THE THREE BASIC DIRECTIONS ARE
1. TRUE NORTH- Direction to the geographic north
pole. 2. MAGNETIC NORTH- Established by
earths magnetic fields.our compass arrows. 3.
GRID NORTH- Established by north and south grid
lines on a map.

  • An azimuth is defined as a horizontal angle,
measured in a clockwise manner from a north
    baseline.

  • When you have turned around completely, you have
    achieved your back azimuth.

  • LAMS

To help figure out your back azimuth use this
simple method
  • LESS THAN 180 ADD
  • MORE THAN 180 SUBTRACT

CARE OF THE COMPASS
36
COMPASS INSPECTION
INSPECTION Look over the compass MOST
IMPORTANT.. Make sure the compass
dial does not
stick!!!
ACCURACY 3 degrees or
PROTECTION Handle compasses carefully.
37
  • COMPASS
  • HANDLING
  • Handle with care.
  • Close and return the compass to its container
    when not in use!!!
  • Attach a string or lanyard.

38
To avoid interference with compass readings,
keep your compass the following distances away
from certain items you might be around
39
1. Metal helmet or rifle?
2. Machine gun?
3. Telephone wires and barbed wire?
4. Field guns and tanks?
5. Power lines?

PACE COUNTS
42
A pace is equal to 2 steps or approximately 60
inches.
REMEMBER Every person has a different length
of natural pace
43
Pace counts are usually done with a distance of
200 meters. Divide the total number of paces by
2. This gives you how many paces you take for
100 meters.
44
SLOPES - Pace is lengthened on the downgrade
and shortened on the upgrade.
45
WINDS- Headwinds shorten pace, and tailwinds
increase the pace.
46
SURFACES- Sand, gravel, mud, etc., all tend
to shorten the pace.
47
ELEMENTS- Rain, snow, and sleet shorten
the pace.
48
Excessive clothing and fatigue tend shorten the
pace.

Orienting the Map
51
  • Orientation by Inspection

52
Orientation by compass
53
  • Place map on flat surface.
  • 2. Place straight edge of compass on any
    north-south grid line.
  • 3. Rotate map and compass until north arrow
  • and black index line form the same v-shaped
    angle like the declination diagram.
  • IMPORTANT!!!!!
  • Degree reading is under the black line.
