The Trojan War

2
  • This information comes mainly from The Illiad, an
epic poem written by Homer that explains the
    Trojan War.
  • The Illiad was followed by The Odyssey, another
epic poem by Homer, which we will be reading
    together.

3
It started with an apple
  • A Greek god goddess (Peleus Thetis) were
celebrating their wedding, but the goddess Eris
    was not invited.
  • Angered, she came, but threw a golden apple on
the table and challenged Paris to declare who
among the goddesses was the most beautiful.
  • Paris was the prince of Troy, in Turkey.

  • Hera promised to make Paris the most powerful man
    in the world.

world, who was Helen of Troy.
  • She lived in Greece, and was married to King
    Menelaus.
  • Paris traveled to Greece, and Aphrodite convinced
Helen to leave with him. The couple took
Menelaus money and got married in Troy.

    Menelaus

8
This Means War!
  • A furious Menelaus gathered his army to sail to
    Troy.
  • One soldier was Odysseus, king of a Greek island
    called Ithaca.
  • Odysseus was reluctant to leave because he just
had a son, named Telemachus, and loved his family
    deeply.

9
  • Upon arriving in Troy, Menelaus requested that
King Priam (Paris father, and king of Troy)
    return the money and Helen.
  • Priam refused, and Menelaus declared war.

10
  • This war continued for 10 years because the
    Trojan walls were so fortified.
  • Finally, Odysseus conceived a plan the famous
    Trojan horse.

11
  • Part of the Greek army hid inside the horse,
while the other part sailed around a bend to fool
the Trojans into believing that they had won the
    war.
  • One Greek soldier remained outside to present the
horse as a gift to the city of Troy.

12
The Fall of Troy
  • After bringing the horse inside, the Trojans
celebrated with wine, and fell into a drunken
    stupor.
  • Seizing their chance, the Greeks climbed out of
the horse, killed the Trojans, and set fire to
    the city.
  • When Menelaus finally regained Helen, he wanted
to kill her for deserting him, but decided
against it when he remembered how beautiful she
    was.
