- Trees in The Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical
Gardens - Comments
3Introduction
- In this project , we visited The Hong Kong
Zoological and Botanical Gardens (HKZBG) which is
located on the northern slope of Victoria Peak
with the highest point of 100 meters and the
lowest point of 62 meters above sea level. This
park had a lot of facilities, for example, the
Bamboo Garden , the Green House , the Herb Garden
, the Magnolia Garden and the Aviary etc.
41.Where can we find woodland in Hong Kong today ?
We can see many woodland in the country
parks in Hong Kong nowadays. We can find many
different kinds of plants and trees in nature.
We can find woodlands and country parks in the
New Territories, Kowloon ,even Hong Kong Island.
Such as, ?Lion Rock Country Park in Sha Tin ?Lam
Tsuen Country Park in the Northern New
Territories ?Pat Sin Leng Country Park in the
Northeastern New Territories ?Kiu Tsui
Country Park in Port Shelter of Sai
Kung ?Victoria Peak ?Chek Keng in Sai Kung
52.Characteristics of woodland in Hong Kong
- Density of vegetation
- Vegetation covers 60 of the land surface in Hong
Kong - High density of trees because of the hot, wet
climate - Floor of the woodland
- Although it is dense, it is very light
6- Variety of vegetation
- Many different types of trees because of the hot,
wet climate - Trees grow new leaves immediately after the old
ones fall - They are always green in appearance
- Common vegetation types found in Hong Kong
include - grasslands
- scrublands,
- Woodlands
- coastal vegetation
- at the estuaries and beaches
7- Height of the vegetation
- The trees are about 5m tall as they can get more
sunlight - They have straight and thick trunks to support
them - Roots of the vegetation
- There are tall and large buttress roots
supporting tall trees - The trees have aerial roots to take water and
oxygen from the air
8- Shape and size of leaves
- Broad leaves with drip tips
- To receive more sunlight and drip water quickly

1234.What are the problems and causes of woodland
in Hong Kong ?
- Nowadays , the number of woodland in Hong Kong is
small . - The main problem of woodland that Hong Kong
facing is deforestation. - People cutting too many trees for their living
uses . - e.g. making papers ,building flats , roads
, highways , railways and residential land use . - Global Warming lead to less water supply and the
trees are growing unhealthily.
135.How do these problems affect our lives?
- Soil erosion.
- When there are no trees to keep the soil in
place, the soil becomes ripe for erosion. - Flooding
- Clearing the forest dramatically increases the
surface run-off from rainfall, mainly because a
greater proportion of the rain reaching the
ground due to a lack of vegetation which would
suck up the excess rainfall.
14- Climate Change
- Greenhouse effect
- Global warming
- Poor air quality
- The most serious consequence is that of climate
change due to the loss of trees. The functions of
trees are to enrich and hold the soil absorb
carbon dioxide collect and recycle water
release oxygen and regulate climate. However,It
will have climate change if deforestation is not
stopped.Â
156.Are we able to solve the problems?
- We are able to solve the problems by using the
following methods - Make widely known to our friends about the
environmental protection - Learn more about the consequences if there is no
forest on Earth - Have more civism, not to destroy the forest
- Protect the things in the country park areas
- Grow plants at home to have more fresh air
- Use wood sparingly.
- Plant more trees
167.what is the best use of our woodland?
- Build up some national parks
- e.g. Yangmingshan National Park in Tai Wan
- The Banff National Park in Canada
- Develop ecological tourism in forest
- Build protective areas for natives
- have more room to house the growing population
178.How can we help protecting our woodland and
tropical rainforest?
- Reuse paper so that fewer trees will be cut
- Support the environmental bodies
- Learn more about tropical rainforests
- Increase our knowledge to teach other people to
protect woodland and tropical rainforest.

20Comment
- After finished this project, we have learnt more
about the - woodland and the tropical rainforest, such as the
characteristics, - the problems that they are facing and so on.
Also, When we - were visiting The Hong Kong Zoological and
Botanical - Gardens, we saw a variety of interesting plants,
like Swamp - Mahogany(???). Its cover is soft! And Sarracenia
hybride - purpurea(???). Its shape is very cute. As a
result, we have - widen our horizons.
