1
The European Technology Platform onSmart
Systems Integration - Smart Systems Evolution,
Challenges and Strategic Objectives
2
The EPoSS Approach
RD in advanced microsystems driven by
application
  • Smart Systems
  • are able to diagnose a situation, describe it and
    qualify it,
  • mutually address and identify each other,
  • are predictive,
  • are able to decide and help to decide,
  • enable the product to interact with the
    environment.
  • They are miniaturised, networked, energy
    autonomous and highly reliable.

Smart implants
Smart RFID
Smart antenna
Smart tire
3
Systems and Integration Approach
Integration at (sub-)systems level
Integration into the macro-system
Integration into the application environment
Integrated design and manufacturing
Heterogeneous aspects
  • Multidisciplinarity optics, mechanics,
    electronics, fluidics,thermo-dynamics,
    chemistry, biology
  • Convergence of technologies Micro, Nano, Bio,
    Info, Cogno
  • Variety of materials silicon and non silicon,
    SiC, alternatives (e.g. polymers, ceramics,
    powders etc.)
  • Multitude of Methods Monolithic, hybrid,
    multi-chip, wafer-level, etc

4
The evolution of Smart Systems
E.g. Integrated, miniaturised, advanced
functionality,
Driver status monitoring, piezo injection
valve,
1st Generation Smart System
E.g. Implantable, miniaturised simple artificial
organs, predictive reactive systems
2nd Generation Smart System
Smart pill, retina implants,
E.g. Self aware, autonomous, interfacing
physical w/ technical world, adaptive to
environment, ubiquitously connected, with
cognitive abilities
3rd GenerationSmart System
Autonomous bio-robots, swarming agents,

Challenges Harsh Environments
Resilience of ceramic coatings in gas turbines
Challenge T operation 600C .. 800C The
efficient operation of power plant gas turbines
at increasing temperature conditions may damage
the ceramic coating of the padels
Functional Principle of the Sensor UltraSound
wave transmitters use acoustic signals from
turbine panels, indicating changes in temperature
and structure (cracks, ,wear out) during
operation
7
Challenges Complexity
15000 parts, 4.5 km and 80kg of copper wires, 70
processors, 60 actuators all weather, power
cogeneration unit, comfort, entertainment and
communication features, cockpit, multi-purpose
display, safety and security systems. All moving
on 4 wheels.
8
SSI - towards sustainable complexity
year 2010
year 2000
Paradigm change
Distributed intelligence Complexity is pervasive
and becomes manageable
Add-on Function Complexity adds on top of
complexity with the risk of loosing the control
Increased smartness in subsystems and
components Higher complexity integrated in the
material and design Networking of subsystems
Reduced complexity at system level Lower power
consumption, weight, and cost Higher robustness
and reliability

EPoSS Strategic Research Objectives
EPoSS has identified the three most important and
most urgent RD priorities for Smart Systems
Integration
1
Smart miniaturized devices with advanced
functionality and performance
The smartest system would be one fulfilling all
three criteria at once.

EPoSS SRA Implementation Impact
  • Creating a whole new world of convenience and
    service
  • Providing innovative solutions for challenges in
terms of energy, mobility, health, demographic
    change, and safety and security
  • Strengthening the competitiveness of the
    European industry

13
EPoSS three lines of activity
  • EPoSS Joint Undertaking
  • EPoSS JTI shall address large industry projects/
    initiatives
  • Prioritise themes in terms of
  • Economic relevance
  • Requirement of strategic cooperation on EU level
  • Dimension (need for larger size than FP7
    projects)
  • Relevance to serve as technological showcase /
    Lighthouse project
  • Bi- and multi-lateral projects
  • European initiative on Sustainable Mobility
    (Italy, Germany,)
  • Japan-European initiative on the topic Beyond
    RFID
  • The Internet of Things (IoT)
  • Promote the topic of IoT amongst stakeholders and
    in public
  • Identify application scenarios for the IoT
  • Evaluate joint activities with other ETPs (NESSI,
    NEM, eMobility)

15
Reminder What a PPP aims at
  • Public Private Partnership (PPP) shall coordinate
large budgets and prioritise and channel funding
  • Industry shall be the driver and main beneficiary
  • Provide means of funding which are currently not
    available.
  • Promote technologies and technological approaches
which are highly relevant for national as well as
    European competitiveness

16
The EPoSS JTI rational
  • Transformation of research into market and
    products
  • Current instruments are not able to satisfy
    customers
  • Budget and work plan stable over a range of years
  • Overcomes fragmentation of funding (EU and
    national)
  • Allocate a appropriate budgets to the topic
    Smart Systems
  • To show a high profile of industry and to drive
    topics from the industry side.
  • High visibility of topic in EP and EU with high
    level meetings on issues

  • Decision to go for JTI has been taken in 2007
  • Revision of SRA will lead to prioritised focus
    topics
  • Options for the implementation will be evaluated
  • Key stakeholders will be assembled (EC, MS,
    Industry)
  • Established governing procedures, rules and
    regulations
  • Call themes established,
  • Budget allocated
