Why I Applied
Professional Development I wanted to work on a
research question with an expert in a related
field and to construct new professional
relationships for myself and my
institution Exposure to Different Culture,
Language, and People I wanted transformational
experience for myself and my family Make a
Difference I wanted to contribute my expertise
to the host country and to return to Rhodes with
a broader pedagogical perspective Prestige
Recognition of scholarship and cultural
ambassador for the American public Rewarding
Sabbatical Experience Provided an interesting
activity to coincide with sabbatical schedule

Calculus with Labs and Identities for Wreath
Symmetric Functions
Lecture Incorporated projects into the calculus
classes I taught, each of which contained about
60 students Research Worked with a specialist
in symmetric functions to generalize symmetric
function identities to wreath symmetric function
identities

Professional and Personal Outcomes
Expanded knowledge Learned about symmetric
functions and other mathematical topics Expanded
professional contacts Established professional
relationships with new colleagues Tangible
outcomes Completed a paper, delivered the
plenary address at a conference organized by my
hosts, and addressed high school students and
researchers at a private scientific research
center Expanded cultural perspective Living and
working in a different environment and culture
has enhanced my familys understanding of another
part of the world and of my own
country Rewarding Experience Satisfaction in
making a contribution to the development of my

Opportunities for Institutional Impact
Curriculum Development Fulbright awards can lead
to new courses and the incorporation of more
international material into existing courses.
Can bring new methodologies, perspectives, and
expertise.   Study Abroad Fulbright scholars
often serve as advocates for study abroad
programs by meeting with and advising students
interested in going abroad. Sometimes work with
Fulbright Campus Reps to review applications.
  Enhanced International Engagement Fulbright
awards often lead to campus visits by colleagues
from host country. The Occasional Lecturer
Program can be used to invite Visiting Fulbright
Scholars. Fulbright scholars can encourage
faculty colleagues to engage in Fulbright or
other international exchanges.     Spokesperson
for International Dialogue Raise awareness about
the issues between the U.S. and other countries
