Taxonomic Evidence Structural and Biochemical
Characters. 3. Floral Formulas and Diagrams
2
As a study aid to understanding general
characteristics of floral structure of the
angiosperm families we are studying, we will be
learning floral formulas and floral diagrams.
A floral formula is a shorthand method of
recording floral symmetry, number of parts,
connation and adnation, insertion, and ovary
position. A floral diagram is a stylized
cross-section of a flower that represents the
floral whorls as viewed from above. Rather like
floral formulas, floral diagrams are used to show
symmetry, number of parts, the relationship of
the parts to each other, and degree of connation
and/or adnation. Such diagrams do not easily
show ovary position.

  • Two important things to note
  • Representative floral diagrams and floral
formulas might not be the same!!! Slightly
different forms might be used to represent the
    family.
  • The floral formulas you need to know are
directly from the family treatments in the Plant
Systematics textbook. The floral diagrams are
from other sources and they will be given to you
    in the lecture-derived powerpoint/pdf documents
    on the class website.
