Title: And Then There Were NOne

1
Point of View
  • And Then There Were NOne

2
Point of View
  • Every story has a point of view, the position or
perspective from which the events of a story are
    seen.
  • Point of view answers the questions Whos
    telling the story?

3
First-Person Point of View
  • 1st person point of view the story is narrated
by one of the characters of the story
  • The character narrating uses the pronoun I.
  • A first person narrator tells only what he or she
    knows or observes.
  • This narrator is likely to convey his or her own
    attitudes and feelings.

4
Third-Person Limited
  • In a story told from a third-person limited
point-of-view, readers see events through the
eyes and mind of ONE of the characters.
  • The character telling the story (as well as
others) is referred to in the third-person, as
he, she, it, or by name.
  • Seeing events from one characters point-of-view
can lead to sharing that characters emotions.
  • Readers experience the characters thoughts and
    feelings with him or her.

5
Third-Person Omniscient
  • Omniscient means all knowing.
  • When a writer uses an omniscient point-of-view,
the events are told from the perspective of an
outside observer who knows and sees all.
  • Such narrators can get into the mind of any
character at any point in the story and can
possess information of which none of the
    characters is aware.
  • The third-person omniscient narrators voice is
not to be considered the authors voice.

6
Mysteries
  • Traditionally, mysteries are written in
    third-person limited point-of-view. Detectives
who are well-know for their intellectual pursuit
and/or dogged persistence toward a mystery
waiting to be solved follow the steps of main
    characters.
  • Such characters are Sam Spade, Sherlock Holmes,
    Charlie Chan, etc.

7
Agatha Christie
  • In And Then There Were None, an omniscient
    narrator was used.
  • Readers are able to look into the minds of all
the characters allowing readers to feel with or
    empathize with various characters.
  • Knowing all generally aids in the solving of
the mystery, but in this novel it takes a keen
eye to figure out the ending.
