Title: Coaching the Deliberate Practice

1
Coaching the Deliberate Practice
2
Objectives - by the end of this lesson you will
be able to
  • state the difference between a Grouping practice
    and a Deliberate practice
  • describe the procedure for coaching a Deliberate
    practice
  • describe the procedure for giving a sight
adjustment and an alteration to the point of aim
  • state the occasions when it would not be
advisable to give a sight adjustment or an
alteration to the point of aim

3
The Difference .......
  • Grouping Practice
  • Smallest possible group
  • Position on target not important
  • A basis for zeroing
  • Not scored
  • Deliberate Practice
  • Elementary Application of Fire
  • The rifle must be zeroed
  • The objective
  • apply fire to the centre of the target
  • achieve the highest score

4
Coaching a Deliberate Practice
  • similar to the grouping practice
  • equipment required by the coach
  • the Coach should watch the firer
  • the firer should declare each shot
  • the coach should record
  • the firers declaration
  • his observations
  • the arrival of each shot

5
...therefore...
  • the Coach must keep in mind
  • the Theory of the Group
  • the principle of the Expected Scoring Area
  • the amount by which one click will move the MPI
at the range at which the practice is being fired
  • how - and when - to give a sight adjustment or
alteration to the point of aim

6
Coaching A Competition Pactice
  • coached in the same way as a deliberate practice
    but with the following considerations
  • the sighting shots should be treated as a group
    and coached accordingly
  • the group should be regarded as a basis for
    zeroing
  • competition rules may preclude the coach from
    touching the rifle, therefore
  • the firer must adjust the sights, acting on the
    Coachs advice

7
When the Competition target is being fired ...
  • the Coach should monitor the practice and in
    particular must
  • remain aware of the principle of the Expected
    Scoring Area
  • ensure that the firer identifies the correct
    aiming mark for each shot
  • be aware of the time, should a limit be imposed

8
Sight Adjustments
  • the Coach must ensure that the firer knows
  • the value of one click of the sights at the
range at which the practice is being fired
  • which way to turn the adjustment screws !
  • to move the MPI up and right, turn the
    approriate screw clockwise
  • to move the MPI down and left, turn the
    approriate screw anti-clockwise

9
Alterations to the Point of Aim
  • normally given using an easily identifiable point
of reference on the target, e.g.
  • in relation to the dimensions of the target
  • in relation to an identifiable feature on the
    target
  • when giving corrections or alterations ........
  • BE BOLD !!

10
When not to give Sight Corrections or Alteration
to the Point of Aim
  • do not alter
  • on a first shot
  • on a shot which was declared bad by the firer,
or observed to be so by the Coach
  • on a shot which is within the firers Expected
    Scoring Area

11
In this lesson...
  • the difference between a Deliberate practice and
    a Grouping practice
  • the specific points which a Coach must bear in
mind when coaching a Deliberate practice
  • the way in which sight adjustments and
alterations to the point of aim are given
  • occasions on which it would not be advisable to
give a sight correction or alteration to the
    point of aim
