Shactivate Septic Digester
HOW SHACTIVATE WORKS to REDUCE ODORS and
SOLIDS Shactivate assists in the breakdown of
organic solids by stimulating and balancing the
various microbial communities present in sewage
systems. Stimulation of these microbial
communities allows the digestion of organic
solids to occur at optimum rates. The raw
materials in SHAC products are acquired from one
of the highest quality humate sources in the
world. The Shactivate product contains the
following Activated Carbon Activated carbon
adsorbs and binds the various toxins and
inhibitory compounds that are found in sewage,
providing a more favorable environment for the
growth of microbial populations. Essential
Trace Minerals Shactivate contains 32 essential
trace minerals and other natural ingredients
which are necessary nutrient sources for
microbial populations Humic Acids Humic acids
stimulate resident microbial populations by
providing available nutrient sources and by
chelating (binding) inhibitory compounds that may
otherwise negatively impact microbial life.
  • USING NATURES CYCLE TO PROMOTE A HEALTHIER
    ENVIRONMENT
  • SHAC products do not provide a 'quick fix' to
symptoms of organic environmental problems. SHAC
products activate all levels of resident
microbes, enabling the ecosystem to naturally
regain its balance. Microbes require a proper
diet of nutrients and minerals, minimal
contamination, and favorable temperature and pH.
SHAC products stimulate microbial activity in
    three ways
  • They provide a comprehensive micro-nutrient
source for the many different species of
    microbes.
  • They provide activated carbon which attracts and
neutralizes particles of chemicals and toxins
    that inhibit microbial activity.
  • They assist in balancing the pH of the system.

  • SHACTIVATE SOLIDS REDUCTION RESULTS
  • Shactivate has been proven to reduce organic
solids in septic and liquid waste systems.
Monitored results illustrate the effects of
    Shactivate on organic solids.
  • In various Canadian and US communities, solids
reduction has been monitored over varied lengths
of time after Shactivate treatments. Significant
results are usually achieved within 6 months of
initial treatment and maintained over time.
  • Test results indicate up to 80 reduction in
organic solids with Shactivate treatment can be
achieved with continued use as a maintenance
    item.
  • In Abbotsford, BC, sewage collection lines were
treated with Shactivate and monitored over
    approximately 5 months.
  • Shactivate was applied to a portion of the sewage
    system

Shactivate Septic Digester General
Application rates and troubleshooting guide
  • Home Septic - 1 liter (1 US qt) Shactivate per
person per year. Flush down Systems toilets or
    drains,
  • applying 1/2 in spring and 1/2 in fall.
(4 persons (4) 1 liter bottles per year)
  • Recreational Vehicles - After emptying the
wastewater holding tank, pour 250 ml (8 oz) of
    Shactivate down the toilet or
  • drain and flush with enough water to
carry all the Shactivate into the tank. Repeat
    each time tank is emptied.
  • For a small tank, use 125 ml (4 oz)
    Shactivate per treatment.
  • Outdoor Toilet/Pits - Apply 1 L (1 US qt) of
Shactivate to holding tanks up to 5000 liters
(1320 US gal) after each cleaning mixed with 1 to
2 gallons of fresh water. For heavy use, apply an
    additional 250ml (8 oz) Shactivate every 1-2
    weeks mixed with fresh water.
  • Troubleshooting Helpful Hints when using
    Shactivate
  • If tank is in poor condition and or severe odors
gases Pump out the tank and apply Shactivate
at double the recommended rates for several
treatments till odors and gases are under
    control. Then treat as normal.
  • Tanks that have a heavy crust double the
application rate of Shactivate directly into tank
if able for one or more applications till crust
has broken up. Crusting may cause sewage and
gases to back up into the home.
  • Structurally damaged fields will affect treatment
results. If conditions are dry inside a pit or
outhouse, it may be necessary to add water down
the opening hole to moisten the residual waste
    material.
  • Treat toilets, outhouses and pits 3-4 days prior
to the start of events if used for large scale
gatherings, especially after long periods of
inactivity to assure maximum odor reduction.
  • NOTE For larger holding tanks, add an additional
1 L (1 US qt) Shactivate for each additional 5000
liters (1320 US gal) of capacity.
  • Toilets with dugout pits - Mix 250 ml (8 oz) of
Shactivate into 20 L (5 US gal) of water earthen
pits and splash down the hole attempting to
moisten the entire pit surface. Repeat every two
    weeks or when odors reappear.
  • Commercial Sani Can Applications - After
cleaning, add 250 ml (8 oz) of Shactivate to 40 L
(10 US Portable Toilets gal) of water before
using. For small tanks (12-15 US gal), apply 125
ml (4 oz) Shactivate to 20 liters (5 US gal) of
    water.

Shactivate Septic DigesterComposting Facts and
Benefits using SHAC
  • COMPOSTING FACTS
  • FACT Naturally occurring microbial communities
are primarily responsible for the decomposition
    of organic material.
  • FACT The goal in managing compost is to create
    an environment suitable for microbial
    communities.
  • FACT While decomposition occurs naturally, it
    may be accelerated and enhanced.
  • BENEFITS OF USING MANURE DIGESTER or SHACTIVATE
    IN COMPOST APPLICATIONS
  • Stimulation of naturally occurring microbial
    communities responsible for decomposition.
  • Improvement in nutrient retention (e.g. nitrogen,
    phosphorus, and potassium) of composting
    material.
  • Decreases the volume of compost material.
  • Increases the moisture retention within
    composting material.
  • Environmentally friendly and safe to use.
  • HUMIC ACID IN COMPOST
  • In addition to containing trace elements required
by resident microbial populations and low-grade
activated carbon which acts to adsorb certain
    toxic/inhibitory compounds, SHAC Manure Digester
also contains humic acids. Humic acids have the
ability to stimulate the growth and proliferation
of resident microbial populations responsible for
decomposition. Apart from the influence of humic
acids on the decomposition of composting
material, there are additional benefits in the
use of final composted material as a soil
    amendment/conditioner. Humic substances act in
many important ways to make soil more productive
    and fertile by
  • Increasing the water holding capacity of soil and
    encouraging drought resistance in plants.
  • Retaining water soluble inorganic fertilizers
    (through chelating), releasing nutrients as
needed to growing plants, and reducing nutrient
    leaching within the soil.
  • Stimulating plant growth and root development.
  • Establishing a desirable environment for
microorganism diversity and development in soil.
  • Forming stable complexes with metals (ex.
chelating of salts), thereby limiting the effects
    of soil salinity.

12
Shactivate Septic DigesterNutrient Retention
and Pile Reduction Results using SHAC
  • The following trials were conducted to determine
the effects of SHAC Manure Digester/Shactivate on
    composting
  • Improved Nutrient Retention
  • In a trial conducted in Ontario, treated compost
material was compared to an untreated control
material to determine efficacy of the product.
The compost material (consisting primarily of
fallen leaves) was analyzed by Stratford
    Agri-Analysis for various nutrients. The
    following results were observed
  • 41.4 increase in Total Nitrogen
  • 59.3 increase in Phosphorus
  • 39.8 increase in Potassium
  • These increases in plants nutrients indicate an
improvement in nutrient retention within the
    material during decomposition or organic
    materials.
  • Pile Reduction Study
  • In a feedlot operation in Alberta, treatment was
applied to composting manure piles (3 control
piles, 2 test piles) to determine the volume
reduction ability of the product. The manure in
the control piles was turned to increase
aeration. The treated piles were given no
    additional treatment.
  • At the end of the 106 day trial, a 45 reduction
in the volume of manure was observed in the
treated piles. A reduction in odors and gases
was also observed in the treated piles.

13
Shactivate Septic DigesterImproved Moisture and
Nitrogen RetentionMicrobial Diversity Improvement
  • Improvement in Moisture and Nitrogen Retention
  • Domestic compost was treated to determine the
effect of the product on moisture retention and
nutrient concentrations (1 treated test pile, 1
untreated control pile). The following results
    were observed after 3 months
  • 40 increase in moisture retention
  • 20.5 increase in available nitrogen indicating
    an improvement in nutrient retention
    within the material.
  • Improvement in Microbial Diversity
  • Composting manure was treated to determine the
effect of the product on microbial diversity (1
treated test windrow, 1 untreated control
windrow). Untreated material was determined to
    be bacterially dominated. The following
results were observed in the treated compost
    material
  • 20.6 increase in active fungi populations
  • 39.4 increase in protozoan populations
  • improved microbial diversity
