Loyola and EPIC
  • Loyola is in the top 1.7 of hospitals
nationwide in its use of EHR
  • AND NOW we are using EPIC to teach part of
    our curriculum

3
What do medical students need?
  • 1. They need to be knowledgeable.
  • 2. They need to be useful.

4
Two needs coming together
  • MS3s need to be comfortable with EPIC before the
start of their 3rd year clerkships
  • LUHS uses EPIC (inpatient and outpatient)
  • Hines VA uses an EHR
  • Radiology curriculum (Chest X-Ray)
  • Needed to be delivered to MS2s in a reliable and
    realistic format

5
Keeping It RealisticUsing EPIC
  • Select actual chest x-rays from our
  • patient population
  • Use the associated notes of that particular
    patient
  • Insert the real labs
  • All identifying information is
    removed

6
Radiology Curriculum Goals
  • Develop systematic approach to CXR interpretation
  • Identify basic findings they will see as an MS3
  • Cardiomegaly
  • Pleural effusion
  • Consolidation
  • Pneumothorax
  • Congestive Heart Failure/Pulmonary edema

7
Radiology Curriculum Goals
  • How?
  • Begin with 1 hour lecture on radiology
  • This is during the 1st week of semester
    4
  • --Continue in small group for 11 weeks
  • Assigned 2-3 cases with CXRs each week
  • MS4s and Attendings already familiar with PACs
demonstrate bells and whistles, such as
    enlarge, change gray scale, etc

8
Can EPIC be used even at the MS1 level?
9
Solutions for becoming comfortablewith EHRs

    room, the computer

on how to use the computer effectively
