It wont happen to me.
Scenario In 1999, Rakesh started to experience
chest pains and shortness of breath. His doctor
suggested he have an angiogram, which indicated
that two arteries in his heart were substantially
blocked. Three weeks later he had a double
bypass operation.
As Rakesh had no critical illness insurance, he
struggled for the next five years to keep his
manufacturing business going. Meanwhile his
health deteriorated steadily and finally his
doctor advised him to stop work before his angina
killed him.
If Rakesh had had critical illness cover in place
in 1999, the lump sum paid out could have paid
off his mortgage, overdrafts and business debts,
all of which probably contributed to his stress
level and heart problems. In addition, Rakeshs
wife took time off work as a self-employed
hairdresser to be with him and to take him to
hospital appointments, and lost work and money as
a result. Some additional money in the bank at
this difficult time would have taken away some of
the stress and helped to keep the couple afloat
financially.
