Title: MANUFACTURING ENGINEERING

1
MANUFACTURING ENGINEERING
(Section 3.4)
2
Industrial Processes
  • Manufacturing engineering has to choose from a
variety of processes to transform material into
    the desired size and shape
  • Refining and Alloying
  • Steel iron ore, blast furnace, pig iron, made
steel in another furnace (open hearth, basic
    oxygen or electric arc)
  • Alloy is a combination of two or more metals to
    achieve better properties (e.g. hardness)
  • Tensile Strength The ability of the material to
    withstand elongation forces
  • Hardness The ability of the metal to withstand
    penetration forces
  • Impact resistance The ability of the material to
    absorb energy
  • Malleability The ability of the metal to be
    shaped and or extended
  • Fatigue resistance The ability of the metal to
    withstand repeated applications of forces
  • Corrosion resistance The ability of the metal to
    withstand corrosive forces.

3
Industrial Processes
  • Casting
  • Process of forming objects by pouring liquid
material into a mold and allowing the material to
    solidify desired shapes
  • Sand molding is expensive as mold is destroyed
    each time
  • Other types Centrifugal, die, gravity and mold
    etc.
  • Metal Forming
  • Working on metal under pressure to form a desired
shape, to improve the physical properties or both
    hot or cold

4
Industrial Processes
  • Metal Cutting
  • Removal of metal by using a cutting tool such as
    shearing, turning, drilling, etc.

5
Industrial Processes
Milling
Turning
Grinding
Drilling
6
Industrial Processes
  • Welding
  • Process by which two pieces of the same metal are
made to bond through the application of heat,
    pressure, or both

7
Industrial Processes
Arc Welding
Spot Welding
Electrodes for Seam Welding
8
Industrial Processes
  • Assembly
  • The process by which various parts and
subassemblies are brought together to form a
    completed assembly or product
  • Welding, screwing, gluing, riveting etc.
  • Assembly may be done in a batch or in a
    continuous process (assembly lines)
  • Finishing
  • Set of processes in which the material, either as
a completed product, subassembly or component
part, is made more effective or presentable
  • Honing and lapping are similar to grinding
    polishing, buffing, brushing etc.
  • Surface cleaning remove dirt and scale
    spraying, vapor degreasing
  • Coating provide decoration, protection and
    texture etc. painting and plating
