• Built out of cut stone
• Found mostly in France, German, and Italy.
• New Vaulting systems Barrel vault, groined vault
  and ribbed vault.
• Intersections in the building creates a Latin
  cross.

Gothic Architecture

• Purpose was to enlarge churches to accommodate
  the many pilgrims who visited churches
• Concern for Light- a symbol for the presence of
  God.
• Overall feeling of Vertical. Architects tried to
  build as tall as they could.

DuccioSiena near Florence(active 1278 - 1319)

• Creates an Altarpiece, called the Maesta
• Front depicts Mary and Christ Child. Back panels
  illustrate the life of Christ.
• Each figure is individualized to a great degree.
• Single light source but no shadow.
• Contains Sienese landscape.

• Duccios Pupil
• Annunciation depicting Gabriel talking to Mary.
• Fabric Detail and drawn line is an example of the
  influence from his time in Naples
