• Divorce is halal but only as a last resort

Quran teaching against divorce -

• If you fear a breach between a man and his
  wife, appoint two arbiters, one from his family
  and the other from hers. If both want to be
  brought back together, Allah will settle things
  between them.
• Muhammed said, The most detestable of lawful
  things near Allah is divorce.

Quran teaching in favour of divorce

• Either keep your wife honestly or put her away
  from you with kindness. Do not force a woman to
  stay with you who wishes to leave.

Islam and Divorce

• The divorce procedure is called the talaq a
  statement I divorce you said three times in
  front of two male witnesses
• The iddah or waiting period a gap of one month
  between each statement is built into the talaq
  so divorce takes three months so as to try to
  effect a reconciliation

Why is divorce detested?

• Breaks the marriage contract
• Marriage is expected to last a life time
• It breaks up the family not just the couple
• Muhammed hated it
• Marriage is blessed by Allah and rejects his
  blessing
