  • Made it harder for Pres and leaders to withstand
    war

Remember the Maine!
  • 1898-fighting broke out in Havana-the Cuban
    capital
  • President McKinley sent the American battleship
    USS Maine to Havana Harbor to protect American
    citizens and property there
  • February 15- a huge explosion ripped through the
    ship
  • At least 260 men were killed

It was not Spains Fault
  • The yellow press focused on this tragedy and
    blamed the Spanish
  • Truth Either the boiler exploded or there was an
    accident in the ammunition hold
  • April 25, 1898, Congress declared war on Spain.
