Domestic Violence (Relationship Abuse) is
  • Domestic Violence is physical, sexual, verbal,
    emotional, or financial abuse between people in a
    present or former relationship. It can involve
    threats, pushing, punching, slapping, choking,
    sexual assault, shouting, name-calling, harming
    or threatening to harm children or pets, and
    other violent or intimidating behaviors. Rarely a
    one-time occurrence, domestic violence usually
    escalates in frequency and severity over time.1

  • The College Standards of Conduct include a
    number of behaviors that could be considered
    domestic violence in some circumstances.
    Domestic violence (or relationship abuse) can
    be defined as physical, sexual, verbal, emotional
    or financial abuse between people who are, or
    have been, in a relationship. It can involve
    verbal threats, physical contact such as punching
    or slapping, sexual assault, or other targeted
    violent behavior. If you have any concerns about
    domestic violence or believe you may be a victim
    of domestic violence, please contact the Sexual
    Abuse Awareness Program Coordinator at

Look for Warning Signs!
  • Jealousy
  • Controlling
  • Quick involvement
  • Unrealistic expectations
  • Isolation
  • Blames others for problems
  • Blames others for feelings
  • Humiliation
  • Name-calling
  • Playing mind games
  • Hypersensitivity
  • Any force during an argument
  • Breaking or striking objects
  • Threats

You might not think anything of it, but
  • If your partner engages in playful use of force
    in sex, it may be a sign that he/she could become
    abusive.
  • This type of behavior entails
  • Acting out fantasies in which you are helpless
  • Portraying the idea of rape as exciting
  • Showing little concern about whether or not sex
    is consensual
  • Using sulking or anger as tools of manipulation
  • Starting to have sex with you when you are
    sleeping or demanding sex when you are ill or
    tired
  • Wanting to make up by having sex after being
    physically or verbally abusive
