Bullying - What is it?
A child is being bullied when he or she is
exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative
actions on the part of one or more students.

    strength
  • The student who is bullied has difficulty
    defending himself/herself

Direct Bullying
  • Physical hitting, kicking, shoving, spitting
  • Verbal taunting, teasing, making degrading
    comment
  • Non-verbal threatening or obscene gestures

  • Physical getting others to do their dirty

IMPLEMENT OLWEUS
  • So, who is this Olweus anyway
  • The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program is a
    research-based Bullying Prevention Program that
    is being implemented at Keith Valley Middle
    School.

  • Provides the tools to identify and track data
    regarding bullying incidents

Olweus Bullying Prevention Program
  • WHY WE DECIDED TO IMPLEMENT
  • Recognized by the Office of Justice and
    Delinquency Prevention, U.S. Department of
    Education, and Substance Abuse and Mental Health
    Services Administration as a Best Practice.
  • Effective in reducing bullying and related
    anti-social behavior by 50 in schools where it
    has been implemented

  • 39.7 had false rumors/lies spread about them to
    make others dislike them

    June in-service days

    at Northley Middle School

    15, 2005 with a special assembly program entitled

AWARENESS AND EDUCATION
  • Students, teachers, and parents become aware of
    how harmful bullying behaviors are to others.
  • Students are educated through class meetings
    which will be held the 2nd Tuesday of each month

IDENTIFICATION
  • School personnel identify targets, as well as
    those who are involved in bullying behaviors

INTERVENTION AND TRACKING
  • School personnel take appropriate action when
    necessary and make referrals
  • Behavioral tracking forms are in place to ensure
    effective communication among all involved
    parties

CONCLUSION
  • IMPLEMENTING OLWEUS HELPS CREATE A SCHOOL
    ENVIRONMENT WHERE ALL STUDENTS FEEL SAFE AND
    BUILD AN ATMOSPHERE OF RESPECT AND TRUST
