Title: Annotating

1
Annotating
2
Techniques Used
  • Underline important words, definitions, and
    meanings
  • Write definitions in the margins or on a post-it
  • Signal where important information can be found
with symbols ( !) in the margin
  • Summarize what you have read at the end of
    paragraphs
  • Write questions about information you do not
    understand
  • Make connections with yourself (text-to-self),
with world events (text-to-world), and with other
    reading (text-to-text)

3
Steps for Annotating a Text
  • 1. Pick up a pencil or pen, and, when necessary,
    Post-its

4
  • 2. Read everything at least twice.
  • The first time, read quickly (skim) and get a
sense of what the text is about
  • The second time, read carefully.
  • Mark anything that you think is
  • Confusing (?) (what?)
  • Interesting (Hmmm..) (I wonder why)
  • Surprising (Wow!) (Really!)
  • Important (you can put or around important
    things)

5
  • 3. Begin to annotate
  • Circle, underline, or mark on a Post- it
    important ideas
  • Mark repetitions this is the author signaling
    important information
  • Circle confusing words or phrases. Then define
    the word from a dictionary.
  • Note passages that seem inconsistent
  • Note passages that generate a strong positive or
    negative response

6
  • 4. Write questions where you made annotations.
These questions can be for the teacher to answer,
for the class to discuss, for you to use in
future writing assignments, or for you to keep as
a reminder of what you were thinking.

7
  • 5. Think about the connections between this text
    and personal experiences (text-to-self),
    information from world events (text-to-world),
and other texts you have read (text-to-text)

8
Why we annotate
  • The process of annotating help you to stay
focused and involved with the reading.
  • This also will help you to concentrate better.
  • It will also help you to monitor and improve your
    comprehension.
  • If you find something that you dont understand
or that you need to ask your teacher about, you
will be able to make a note of it, and then go on
    with your reading.

9
How I annotate
  • I go to a place where nothing will distract me.
  • I turn off anything that could distract me.
  • I sit at my desk.
  • I get out a pen and my post its.
  • And I start reading
