Major results on using the Globus Toolkit

• Globus (and Condor) were chosen following a
  detailed status-of-the-art analysis of worldwide
  middleware tools in year 2000
• Choice made on the basis of open source approach,
  modularity, flexibility, easy access to
  developers, excellent support and very proactive
  attitude of the key actors (Carl, Ian and Miron)
• Basic functionality easily available quickly,
  very good cooperation on design of new needed
  functionality and good response to problems
• And in a short sentence it worked!

Major issues

• Contrast between RD mission and industrial
  quality support
• Version management, regression testing, different
  user environments, CS staff motivation etc.
• Difficulty of international software shared
  production with different funding agencies goals
• Most of problems only appear when real users
  start to deploy real applications (scalability,
  user mistakes, user environments, security
  policies, etc.)
• Negotiate migration GT2-GT3
• EDG needs GT2 support throughout 2004
• WorldGrid and EGEE (www.cern.ch/egee-ei ) future
  activities will require higher level of GT
  support
• Recent industry entrance in the game might offer
  a solution
