Biomass Energy System Technologies (BEST) A
Biomass Fired Heating System for medium sized
energy users that is
  • Proven to be technically feasible
  • Economically viable
  • Environmentally responsible

Now with Smart-Fire Technology for more
efficient operation!!
5
The Benefitsof the Vidir Biomass Energy Heating
System (BEST)
  • Environmentally
  • Responsible
  • Automated Controls
  • Low maintenance
  • Low operating costs.
  • Farmers are stubble burning this fuel in the
field creating seasonal air quality problems.
They are anxious to get rid of it. Our BEST can
heat 100s of homes and remove this source of
    pollution.

6
Introduction to Vidir Biomass BEST Heating Systems
  • Arose out of need for heat at the Vidir
    manufacturing plant north of Arborg.
  • Features
  • high output efficiency
  • low greenhouse gas emissions
  • minimal operator intervention requirements

7
Biomass Offers More than Economic Benefits
  • Biomass is
  • Renewable
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Available at stable prices
  • Supportive of the local economy.

Main System Components Diagram
11
Beat the rising cost of fuel!
  • One 1000 lb bale has 7 - 8 million btu of
potential heat, enough to heat 100 homes for an
hour during the coldest winter night
  • The heat imbedded in one bale is worth 84 - 120
at current natural gas prices, more using
    propane or heating oil prices.
  • For the cost of a coal burning system, you can
have a clean burning biomass system that does not
pollute and pays for itself in less than 3 years
  • Patents Pending on the only system ever designed
that can burn wheat, barley and oat straw with
high silica content and operate trouble free year
    after year

12
More than Economic Benefits
  • Renewable Biomass
  • Sequestered SOLAR energy released
  • Biomass fuels are a plentiful resource. Fossil
fuel supplies are ultimately finite. Manitoba
produces 19,000,000 tons of waste agricultural
    biomass annually.
  • Environmental Benefits
  • Biomass combustion is CO2 neutral and so is not a
producer of greenhouse gas linked to global
    warming.
  • Magnitude of 4 x better than nature - clean CO2
returned to nature to encourage plant life

13
7 x better for Farmers
  • Available Biofuels at Stable Prices
  • Biofuels are widely available. Forest or
    agriculture-based.
  • Biofuel prices are stable and locally controlled.
  • Local Economic Benefits
  • Biofuel dollars remain in the local economy.
    Biomass collection, preparation and delivery
involves greater labor input than fossil fuel
distribution. Improves the local tax base and
    building tax revenues.

14
Vidir Morris Community CHP
  • Combined heat and power generation in Morris
    will
  • Heat our plant and displace 120,000 NG annually
  • When the infrastructure is in place we expect to
  • Generate and inject power into the Hydro Grid
worth 200,000 annually at approx 15 of the
capital cost of other electric power generating
    systems
  • Serve as a standby emergency power generating
system for the hospital, retirement home, and the
    community center Value 100,000 annually
  • Displace 200,000 worth of heat with public
facilities heating and district heating annually
  • Dr Bibeaus Turbion Power generating system is
expected to be able to run maintenance free with
100 uptime including the coldest nights of winter

15

20
Design FeaturesHeat Exchanger - 3 options
  • Turbion CHP Combined Heat and Power Systems We
are working with Dr Bibeau, Les Routledge, the
Town of Morris and others to develop a CHP system
to provide emergency heat and power to public
buildings in Morris such as hospitals, schools,
    public and retirement housing.
  • Atmospheric pressure water heat exchanger
consists of a series of tubes through which the
heated flue gases pass transferring the heat to
the water surrounding the tubes. Hot water is the
most efficient way to distribute heat to the
    desired space heating points
  • Steam boiler

21
Low Emissions
  • Independent testing.
  • The following gases were measured from the
    exhaust gas stream
  • Oxygen (O2)
  • Carbon Monoxide (CO)
  • Sulphur Dioxide (SO2)
  • Oxides of Nitrogen (NO, NO2, NOX)
  • Carbon Dioxide (CO2).
  • Particulates

Clear clean steam exhaust
22
POI Summary for 24-hr Averaging Period
The results of the dispersion model indicate
that the emissions of all of the measured
parameters from the Vidir BEST System comply with
the Ontario and Manitoba regulated Point of
Impingement and Ambient Air Quality Criteria
Concentrations. The POI concentrations for the
remaining combustion gases do not exceed any of
the regulated POI limits or AAQC. In general the
POI concentrations predicted by the dispersion
modeling for all measured pollutants are at least
one-half of the regulated levels with no
pollution control devices. - Dillon Final
Report, March 2003
23
