Questions and Answers
  • What requirement are necessary for peer tutoring?
  • We look for students that have good communication
skills and have a genuine interest in the subject
they are tutoring. We seek a recommendation from
your instructor and require that you received an
A or B in the course. We like all of our
tutors to maintain a 3.0 GPA.

Questions and Answers
  • Is this a paid position?
  • Peer tutors are employees of the college and
tutoring is classified as a work study position.
All student positions on the campus are minimum
wage. You will be required to complete paperwork
in the Financial Aid office. Hours vary depending
on the need and scheduling. More information on
    this to follow

Questions and Answers
  • I need to make sure I can pay my car insurance?
Am I guaranteed a certain amount of tutoring?
  • There are no guarantees with tutoring. Tutoring
is need based meaning that if students need it
and request it then we can find you hours.
However, your schedule is subject to change. The
Writing and Math Tables have regular schedules
and this is determined by the Specialist. Tutors
that are motivated, creative, and concerned about
their students learning process are highly
sought after. Many of our tutors work an average
    of 10 hours per week.

Questions and Answers
  • Can I serve as a volunteer tutor?
  • The fact that you want to freely help fellow
students is certainly commendable and we
encourage you to do so. However, the ASC Peer
    Tutorial Service Program has national
certification through the College Reading and
Learning Association, and all of our tutors are
students (peers) that have completed training and
serve as paid employees in the Academic Support
    Center.

8
Questions and Answers
  • I have not even started college, why was I
    recruited for tutoring?
  • Many of our newest students are sought as tutors
based upon their high school academic standing.
Often, we encourage you to fully engage in your
classes, participate in the training, become
familiar with the college and the ASC and begin
tutoring at the start of the Spring semester or
    when you feel ready.

Questions and Answers
  • I understand that some ASC tutors are recruited
    for private tutoring?
  • The Academic Support Center has quite a good
reputation for their peer tutors. Often times
parents and high school guidance councilors will
call looking for a private tutors. The most
    requested subjects include Mathematics,
Chemistry and Physics. I will pass this
information on to the tutors through email. It
is up to you to make contact with the individual.
Some suggestions get a copy of the textbook,
schedule at least (4) appointmentsit takes times
to get into a good rhythm of tutoring. Our
tutors charge between 10 and 15 per hour. You
may conduct private tutoring at the college in
the library or the ASC. You are not to let it
interfere with your classes or your scheduled ASC
tutoring commitments. Keep in mind, you serve as
    a representative of the college.
