  • Latin for old stone.
  • Climate colder then today.
  • Winters lasted longer.
  • Land covered by spruce and fir trees.
  • Mastodons and other extinct animals roamed.
  • People foraged.

What is the Archaic Period?
  • Archaic Period
  • 7,000B.C.-5,000B.C.
  • Hunt game, gathered nuts, and berries.
  • Flint tools became more complex and could take
    the fur off bear or deer.
  • Hammers from elongated river rock.
  • Moved from place to place according to the
    season.
  • Spring along the coast learned to trap and
    spear.
  • Winter closer to fall line to fish.

  • Mississippian Influence
  • 800A.D.-1500A.D.
  • Towns located along the Mississippi River.
  • Influenced by traders that came north from
    present day Mexico and taught them new ideas.
  • Built ceremonial centers allowed them to gather
    to together for religious worship, recreation,
    and fellowship.
  • Believed that ceremonies helped with growing
    better crops and live in harmony with the earth.
  • Farthest advancement was along the PEE Dee River.
  • Hunters, farmers, and traders looking for
    minerals.
  • Town Creek Indian Mound was a ceremonial center
    in which temple and daily life took place.
