Architecture
  • He was a self-taught architect and spent his life
    building his beloved home Monticello based on the
    books of the famous Italian architect Palladio.

Gardening
  • Jefferson owned several plantations including
    Monticello and Poplar Forest. He brought seeds
    from Europe and even tried to grow Mulberry trees
    for silkworms.

Archaeology
  • Jefferson was Americas first scientific
    arahaeologist. Today modern archaeologists are
    uncovering artifacts from his birthplace,
    Shadwell.

Slavery
  • Because Jefferson had several large southern
    plantations, he owned hundreds of slaves.

  • When only a young man of thirty-three, Jefferson
    was called upon by the Continental Congress to
    write the Declaration of Independence.
