- National Accord signed in 1996
- Provincial and federal governments agreed to
establish complementary legislation for legal
protection of endangered and threatened species - Provincial Wildlife Act amended in 1997 and 1998
to legally designate, list and protect plants and
animals deemed at risk in SK

- The purposes of this enactment are to prevent
Canadian indigenous species, subspecies and
distinct populations of wildlife from becoming
extirpated or extinct, to provide for the
recovery of endangered or threatened species, to
encourage the management of other species to
prevent them from becoming at risk.

- SARA may come into play on private/ provincial
lands, as a safety net, only if the responsible
minister deems that not enough is being done by
the province to protect SAR - Federal lands include National Parks, AAFC
lands, EC lands, DND lands, and First Nations
lands

16What is Critical Habitat?
- The needs of a species for survival and also for
recovery - Critical Habitat sets the Federal legislation
apart from Provincial Legislation - National Recovery teams will advise the competent
minister on the definition of Critical Habitat
for each of the SAR

18Regulations for compensation and enforcement are
being developed at this time.

- No at this time have been allocated to
enforcement development - No policy exists for SARA enforcement to date
- In 2003 more than 14 Million will be available
for stewardship conservation issues
- Compensation
- SARA states that compensation may be given if a
loss of revenue is experienced when protecting
SAR - Compensation will only be used as a last resort
after stewardship has failed
