preservationist, author, archaeologist, and
philanthropist! He was a lot of things! The
pharmaceutical company started in 1876 became one
of Americas most successful big businesses! He
graduated from Philadelphia College of Pharmacy.
His company donated to the Historic Landmarks in
Indiana, Indiana Historical Society, Indianapolis
Museum of Art, Childrens Museum of Indianapolis,
Butler University, Earlham College, Wabash
College, and the Episcopal Church! He donated a
ton of money! Eli Lilly married Evelyn Fortune
but divorced her in 1926. He remarried Ruth Helen
Allison in 1927. Eli Lilly died on January 24,
1977 in Indianapolis.
