Title: New Generation of ESA Telemetry and Telecommand System

1
New Generation of ESA Telemetry and Telecommand
System
  • Y.Doat, M.di Giulio, G.P.Calzolari
  • ESA/ESOC
  • SpaceOps 2004

2
Introduction
  • The TM and TC System
  • Provides SLE services to the Users.
  • Will be installed in all the Ground Stations of
    the ESAs Network (ESTRACK).
  • Implements SLE services that will ensure
inter-operability of the ESA stations with the
    Control Centres of other organizations.

3
SLE Transfer Services
Space Link Extension (SLE) transfer services Set
of services required to access the space link
formats in a uniform way.
  • The SLE Services include two major elements
  • transfer services that move space link data units
between ground stations, control centres and
    end-user facilities
  • management services that control the scheduling
and provisioning of the transfer services.
  • The SLE Services operate in two phases
  • Definition phase (management activities)
  • Utilization phase, (data transfer).

4
Return SLE Transfer Services
  • Return All Frames (RAF) complete set of TM
frames from a single space link symbol stream
  • Return Channel Frames (RCF) Master Channel (MC)
or specific Virtual Channels (VC) extracted from
    a particular RAF channel
  • Return Frame Secondary Header (RFSH) MC or VC
Frame Secondary Headers (FSH) extracted from a
    R-AF channel
  • Return Operational Control Field (R-OCF) MC or
VC Operational Control Fields (OCF) extracted
    from an R-AF channel
  • Return Space Packet (RSP) retrieves packets with
    selected Application Process Identifiers (APID)
    from one spacecraft VC

5
Return Data Transfer Interface
6
Forward SLE Transfer Services
  • Forward Command Link Transmission Unit (F-CLTU)
users provide CLTUs for uplink to the spacecraft.
  • Forward Telecommand Frames (FTCF) users supply
TC frames to be encoded into CLTU ready for
    uplink
  • Forward Telecommand Virtual Channel Access
(FTCVCA) users provide complete VCs for uplink
  • Forward Space Packets (FSP) users provide
packets for uplink to a spacecraft without the
need to coordinate with other users of the
    spacecraft

Forward Data Transfer Interface

The SLE Application Program Interface (API)
  • ESA in collaboration with industry have designed
    an Application Program Interface (API)
  • It isolates the SLE application from the specific
    characteristics of a given middleware
  • It offers a standard communication service to the
SLE application in the form of a set of standard
    functions
  • The ESA Control Center will connect to the ESA
    Ground Stations via TCP/IP.

9
The MC Application Program Interface (API)
  • ESA in collaboration with industry have designed
    an Application Program Interface (API)
  • It isolates the TMTCS application from the
specific characteristics of the ESA MC
  • The TMTCS is not affected by the technology used
    for monitoring and control
  • The ESA Central Ground-Station Monitoring and
Control system will connect to the TMTCS via
    CORBA.

10
System Overview 1
  • The TMTCS consists of 2 main blocks TPS and TCS.
  • Initial Telemetry Processor (TPS) Services
  • Return All Frames (RAF)
  • Return Channel Frames (RCF)
  • Return Operational Control Field (OCF).
  • Initial Telecommand System (TCS) Services
  • Forward CLTU
  • Forward Space Packet (FSP)

11
System Overview - 2
  • 1. SLE service Provision
  • Service scheduling (e.g., service start and stop
    times)
  • User characteristics (e.g., events notified to
    the User).
  • Configuration of Service Provision is achieved
    through Service Instances .
  • 2. SLE Service Production
  • Actual processing and transmission of TM and TC
    data units
  • TM production
  • TC production.

12
System Overview - 3
13
Configuration of an SLE Service Providerthe
Service Instances
  • SLE transfer services need to be
  • Scheduled
  • Configured
  • Controlled
  • Monitored.
  • Service provisioning by means of Service
    Instances (SI)
  • TM provisioning includes on-line and off-line SIs
  • TC provisioning on-line SIs

14
Configuration of an SLE Service Providerthe
Spacecraft Session
  • CCSDS Space Link Session a continuous period
during which an SLE system provides the
capability to use one or more physical channels
    on a space link.
  • The Space Link Session is a matter of general
ground station management. It is handled by the
    Complex Manager.
  • The TMTCS supports Forward/Return Spacecraft
Session a continuous period during which the
TMTCS is fully configured with the parameters of
    a given spacecraft

15
Service Instances and Spacecraft Sessions
16
Subsystem Units and Basic States
  • TCS and TPS are defined as two independent
Sub-System Units of the TMTCS (the System).
  • Each SSU has own Basic States Set-up and
    Operable.
  • Provision of Return Services may take place
    during reconfiguration of Forward Services
    production, or vice-versa .
  • In Basic State Operable
  • the TPS can always supports service production
    for offline delivery mode.
  • the TPS/TCS support service production for online
delivery mode only during the Forward / Return
    Spacecraft Session.

17
Spacecraft Session and SSU Basic States
18
Monitoring and Control aspects of the TMTCS
  • Main elements of the TMTCS database
  • Variable Lists about Armed Service Instances.
  • Variable Lists about Installed Service
    Instances.
  • parameters of the Forward/Return Spacecraft
Sessions. (either the on-going or to the
    next-scheduled Session).
  • all the parameters of the System (TMTCS) and
    Subsystem Units (TPS and TCS).

19
