2Corrosion Costs in all Industrialized
Nations
amount to 3 of the GNP of each country.

3Microcomposite Multistructural Formable Steel
- Awarded, patented chemical composition and
unique steel microstructure minimizes the
formation of micro galvanic cells in the steel
structure, preventing corrosion initiation - High Design Yield Strength allows for design
reduction of rebar quantities and simplifies
installation
4Comparison to normal steel
5Mechanical Properties

27Crack Widths
- Crack widths analysis carried out
- to BS8110 and EC2 for both beams
28Beam 2 First Crack Appears at 7.5 KN

31Crack widths
- All actual cracks are smaller than the predicted
ones - MMFX steel is corrosion resistant so larger
cracks can be acceptable
32Crack Propagation At 30 kN
33Marketing Prospects
34- Cost is estimated to be 2-3 times the price of
Grade 460 Steel - Only produced in the USA at the moment
- but
- Higher Design Yield Strength can lead to smaller,
more underdesigned members - Maintenance Costs reduced/eliminated due to the
non-corrosive nature of the steel
35Conclusion
- MMFX steel bars meet BS8110 and EC2 deflection
and crack width criteria - Good basis for further research
- Favourable prospects for usage in the UK and
other parts of the world.
