Goal

• To present a quick summary of the work in
  progress on the COPS protocol in the RAP WG and
  DiffServ PIB (Policy Information Base) in the
  DiffServ WG.

COPS

• COPS
• uses TCP as its transport and maintains a long
  lived connection between the Policy Server and
  the Policy Client/Network device
• Allows dynamic updates of synchronized state
• Can Add/Update/Remove provisioned data
• Supports reliable, large transactions
• Provides exclusive access to data
• Fault tolerance, fail-over support

COPS

• Usage for RSVP Policy Control RFCed.
• Usage for Provisioning currently in progress.

PIB

• PIB is the data model used for policy
  provisioning.
• DiffServ PIB currently provissions
• Classification, Metering, Action, Queueing

IPOs usage

• On the edge, COPS-PR can be used for IPOs
  communication between the Policy Server and the
  Network Device. And the PIBs existing
  constructs can be used, with addition of some new
  Action types specific to Optics. This allows
  Policy Admission Control for IPO networks by
  reuse of existing technology.

IPOs Usage

• COPS-PR and PIB can be used for more than just
  Admission Control Policies.
• Usage of COPS-PR and PIB for MPLS is being
  proposed, draft-wright-policy-mpls-00.txt. With
  usage of COPS-PR for DiffServ and MPLS available,
  using COPS-PR and PIB for IPO may be beneficial.
