  • Often used to point out truths about life
  • Can provide a welcome change of pace
  • Can reveal something important about real-life
    people and events

  • The order in which events occurred

IMAGERY
  • Language that appeals to the senses and gives you
    a clear image in your mind.
  • Sensory details
  • Specific images that appeal to our senses of
    sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch.

FORESHADOWING
  • The use of clues to hint at what will come later
  • We may not realize that clues were given until we
    reach the end of the story

  • A contrast between expectation and reality
  • SITUATIONAL IRONY
  • What actually happens is the opposite of what is
    expected or appropriate

    surprises that we must often face.
