• The most "rigorous" of all research designs.
• Manipulation, control, and observation of
  variables.
• Pre-Test / Post-Test, Intervention

Correlational Designs

• Seeks to relate two or more variables to see if
  they influence each other.
• Uses a statistical test to determine the tendency
  or pattern.
• Does not prove a relationship
• Indicates an association.

Survey Designs

• Used to describe a trend or to determine
  individual opinions.
• Helps to identify important beliefs and attitudes
  of individuals.
• Can provide useful information to evaluate
  programs.

Grounded Theory Designs

• Used to derive a general explanation or theory of
  a process.
• The theory is grounded in the data collected
  from participants.

Ethnographic Designs

• Used to provide an understanding of a shared
  pattern of behavior of a particular group or
  individuals.
• Includes case studies.
• Data collected in the form of observations,
  interviews, and documents.

Narrative Research Designs

• Used to describe the lives of individuals, to
  collect and tell stories about peoples lives,
  and to write narratives of individual
  experiences.

Mixed Methods Designs

• Used when you have both qualitative and
  quantitative data and both together provide a
  clearer understanding of the research problem
  than by themselves.

• Utilizes both qualitative and quantitative data
  to address improvements in the an educational
  setting, in teaching, and in the learning of
  students.
