What is EndNote?
  • EndNote is a tool for managing and maintaining
    references (i.e. sources of information, ideas,
    or quotes). This is especially useful when
    writing essays, papers, or journals.
  • EndNote can be used together with Microsoft Word
    to streamline the process of inserting and
    managing these references.

Initial Setup
  • Launch EndNote from the Tools menu
  • (Tools gt EndNote 9 gt Go To EndNote)
  • You can also open EndNote from the Start Menu,
    independent of Microsoft Word.
  • Open Microsoft Word and create a new document.
  • (Start gt General Software gt MS Office 2003 gt MS
    Word 2003)

Creating a Library
  • Create a new EndNote library.
  • (File gt New)
  • Save the file with an appropriate name (e.g.
    Tutorial_references.enl).

Adding References Manually
  • Add the references contained in the table below.
  • (Reference gt New Reference)
  • The references below are of Reference Type
    book.
  • Changes are automatically saved so close the
    reference dialog when a new reference is
    complete.
  • Note for titles with multiple authors, enter
    one name per line.

Add References from Databases
  • Navigate to the Otago University Library homepage
    (http//www.library.otago.ac.nz)
  • Click on the Databases link.
  • Select the ProQuest database.

  • Create a search for Apple Computer Inc.
  • Mark the articles you wish to import by checking
    the box to the left of the title.
  • Go to the Marked List.
  • Make sure the Documents and Bibliography view is
    active.
  • Select the Export option.

  • Choose Export directly to ProCite, EndNote or
    Reference Manager.
  • EndNote will ask where the references should be
    stored. Locate the library created earlier and
    choose Open.
  • This will import the references directly into
    your library file.

Add References from the Library Catalogue
  • Navigate to the Otago University Library homepage
    (http//www.library.otago.ac.nz)
  • Click on the Catalogue link.

Add References from the Library Catalogue
  • Click on Basic Search.
  • Create a Keyword anywhere search for Super
    Intelligence.
  • Check the box beside the top two items in the
    search results.
  • Scroll to the bottom of the screen.
  • In the Record Options box, select EndNote
    Citation from the Select Download Format dropdown
    list.
  • Click Format for Print/Save.

Add References from the Library Catalogue
  • This will load a text file in the web browser
    containing the EndNote Citation details.
  • Save this text file to your My Documents folder.
  • Switch to EndNote.
  • From the File menu, select Import.
  • (File gt Import)
  • Set the Import Option to Otago University
    Library.
  • Click on Choose File and locate the text file
    that was saved.
  • Click Import.
  • The citations will be added to the EndNote
    library.

Organising, Searching Sorting
  • The library can be sorted by clicking on either
    of the headings in the library window (i.e.
    Author, Year, Title).
  • The library can be searched.
  • (References gt Search References)
  • Search the library by using key words to search
    in all or specific fields such as Author, Year,
    Title etc.
  • EndNote will then display all the references that
    match the search criteria.
  • To view the entire library again, choose Show All
    References.
  • (References gt Show All References)

Inserting Citations into Word
  • In EndNote, select the citation you would like to
    insert into your Word document.
  • Switch to Microsoft Word.
  • Insert the citation using the Insert Selected
    Citation function.
  • (Tools gt EndNote 9 gt Insert Selected Citation)
  • This places the citation at the specified point
    in the text.

Creating a Bibliography
  • EndNote can automatically create a bibliography
    of all the citations inserted into the Word
    document.
  • Insert several more citations into your document.
  • Place the cursor at the end of the document.
  • Choose Format Bibliography.
  • (Tools gt EndNote 9 gt Format Bibliography)
  • Select the preferred bibliography style.
  • The bibliography should now be inserted.
