Title: The Five Kingdoms

1
The Five Kingdoms
2
Objectives
  • Name and describe the five kingdoms of living
    things.
  • Explain the relationship between classification
    and evolution.
  • Classify a variety of living things.

3
Early years
  • For many years, biologists recognized only two
    kingdoms. (Plant and Animal)

4
  • Animals included all animals that moved, ate food
and stopped growing at a certain size.

5
  • Plants included all organisms that did not move,
used photosynthesis, and grew as long as they
    lived.

6
Problems with early system
  • Fungi and bacteria didnt really fit in as plants
    because they do not photosynthesize.
  • Euglena seems to belong to both groups.or
    neither.
  • Todays classification into 5 Kingdoms is more
    precise.

7
KingdomFungi
  • Cells with cell walls, nuclei, and organelles.

8
KingdomFungi
  • Mostly many-celled.

9
KingdomFungi
  • Absorbs nutrients from other organisms.

10
KingdomFungi
  • Do not move.

11
KingdomFungi
  • Most reproduce sexually and with spores.

12
Kingdom Monerans
  • Simple cells with no nuclei or organelles.

13
Kingdom Monerans
  • Single-celled may live in colonies.

14
Kingdom Monerans
  • May eat or make food.

15
Kingdom Monerans
  • Reproduces by cell division.

16
Kingdom Protists
  • Cells with nuclei and organelles some with cell
    walls.

17
Kingdom Protists
  • Mostly single-celled.

18
Kingdom Protists
  • May make or eat food.

19
Kingdom Protists
  • Reproduces by cell division some sexually.

20
Kingdom Plants
  • Cells with cell walls, nuclei, and organelles.
  • The plant kingdom is not divided into Phylums,
    they are divided into Divisions.

21
Kingdom Plants
  • Many celled

22
Kingdom Plants
  • Do not move about (on their own)

23
Kingdom Plants
  • Use photosynthesis

24
Kingdom Plants
  • Most reproduce sexually.

25
Kingdom Animals
  • Cells with nuclei and organelles.

26
Kingdom Animals
  • Many-celled

27
Kingdom Animals
  • Can move about.

28
Kingdom Animals
  • Eat food

29
Kingdom Animals
  • Most reproduce sexually.

30
Classification and Evolution
  • Classification shows the evolutionary
    relationships among living things.

31
  • The more common traits they share, the more
    closely they are related.

32
Theory is
  • Humans and octopuses belong to same kingdom and,
in theory, share the same ancestor about 600
    million years ago.

33
Theory is
  • Humans and Polar Bears belong to the same
kingdom, phylum and class and , in theory, share
the same ancestor about 100 million years ago.

34
Theory is
  • Humans and Gorillas share the same kingdom,
phylum, class, and order and, in theory, share
the same ancestor about 9 million years ago.

35
Therefore.
  • You are more closely related to.
  • Than a.

36
Science and Technology
  • Comparative anatomy Scientists chart the
    relationships of organisms with similar
    structures, bone patterns, glands.

37
DNA Research
  • Scientists now study similarities of DNA
    patterns.
  • Thru these studies, we are learning more about
    our closest relatives.
