4Role of SAP R/3 in this subject
- SAP R/3 is an example of PEAS
- We are here to learn about ES and PEAS, not SAP
R/3. - You will end up knowing a lot about SAP and R/3.
- You will also know hardly anything about SAP and
R/3!
(a small amount of knowledge about a HUGE topic
is still a lot!)
5Packaged Enterprise Application Market 2003
6Definition of ERP (Deloitte Consultings ERPs
Second Wave report, 1998)
- An Enterprise Resource Planning system is a
packaged business software system that allows a
company to - Automate and integrate the majority of its
business processes - Share common data and practices across the entire
enterprise - Produce and access information in a real-time
environment. - n
7The major PEAS vendors (2002 revenue)
- SAP 7.4B p.a.
- PeopleSoft J.D.Edwards 3.0B p.a.
- Oracle (Applications) 2.6B p.a.
- Seibel 1.5B p.a.
- Microsoft 0.7B p.a.
- i2 0.4B p.a.
- Hundreds of smaller vendors
8Most of what we cover in this steam will be about
SAP
- I struggle to keep up with all there is to know
about SAP. You will too. - Being on top of all the vendors products is too
much for any single person. - Just as we only teach one programming language in
IS (Java), if you understand what one PEAS vendor
is doing, you have a good basis for understanding
the others.

12What is SAP R/3?
- Most of SAPs non-R/3 products on the previous
slide are new, e.g., post-1999. - When you hear someone say we are using SAP,
there is a high probability that they mean R/3 - In this subject, we use the latest version, R/3
4.7, also known as R/3 Enterprise. Some
organizations are still using version 3.1i, which
is about seven years old.
133.SAPs client-server architecture

154. Using SAP R/3 Enterprise (v.4.7) in this
subject
- You can use any SAPgui program anywhere in the
world to talk to the servers at QUT. - We use server S03 at QUT.
- We are clients 200 and 400.
- A client is like a separate company.
- Our two clients share the server (and SAP R/3
code). When you are on one client you will not be
aware of students on the other one.
16Get your account number, initial password (and
some group details for Module 9, Project 3) from
Webraft
17Your SAP account number
- You need client, username, and password.
- If your username is UM-2, use client 200
- If your username is UM-4, use client 400
- Cut and paste your password for first login (you
will be asked to change it then)

31To install SAPgui at home
- Buy or borrow the SAPgui CD
- Follow instructions on page 7 of Subject Notes,
which direct you to the QUT website - sap.qut.edu.au (no www at start)
- After you install the SAPgui, download the login
file from QUT into you root Windows directory
(e.g. /WINDOWS) - SAPlogon.ini
- SAP Help is available from help.sap.com
32Minor details
- There is a web-based version of the SAPgui,
called WEBgui. It is slower and less easy to use
than SAPgui. You can try it on sap.qut.edu.au - Our lab classes are in lab UG24 (upper ground)
