What is Software Testing?

• More than just error detection
• Tested under controlled conditions
• Verification
• checking or testing of components for conformance
  and consistency by evaluating results against
  pre-specified requirements.
• Error Detection
• should intentionally attempt to make things wrong
  to determine if things happen when they should
  not or things do not happen when they should.
• Validation
• looks at system correctness.

• White Box Testing
• Also called Structural testing/Glass Box testing.
• used for testing code keeping the system specs in
  mind.
• Structural System Testing Techniques
• Compliance Testing
• Operational Testing
• Mutation testing, Basic Path Testing, Control
  Structure testing
• Black Box Testing
• Also called Functional Testing, concentrates on
  testing of the functionality rather than the
  internal details of code.
• Gray Box Testing
• Similar to Black Box, but test cases, risk
  assessments and test methods are based on
  knowledge of internal data and flow structures.

Manageability HW and SW Inventory

• Problem
• Inaccurate HW SW inventory information can
  impede regulatory compliance, can lead to
  incorrect payments for software licenses,
  maintenance contracts, and can fail to identify
  HW components that are recalled or under
  warranty. Accurate audits are difficult to
  execute because the in-band agents can be
  defeated.
