Title: The Effects of the Energy Star Program on Office Equipment

1
The Effects of the Energy Star Program on Office
Equipment
  • Kevin Graf
  • Neysa Sanchez-Quintana

2
ENERGY STAR Office Equipment Program
  • Partnership with the office equipment industry to
    promote energy-efficient computers, monitors,
    copiers, etc
  • Equipment is designed with automatic power
    management features.
  • Unattended machines will automatically power down
    when not active.
  • Powering down cuts down on both operating costs
    and pollution.

3
Energy Star Requirements
4
Kettering Labs First Floor Analysis
  • Based on a 9.5 hr workday, 250 days a year.
  • Peak Power Load for no E-Star office 15,730 W
  • Peak Power Load for E-Star office 7,345 W
  • 55 reduction in Peak Power Load

5
Kettering Labs First Floor Analysis
  • No Energy Star Equipment
  • Total Energy Demand 77,497 kWh
  • Total Annual Cost 4,206/yr.
  • Total C02 Emissions 247,987 lbs C02/yr.
  • 0.48 W/ft2
  • All Energy Star Equipment
  • Total Energy Demand 23, 310 kWh
  • Total Annual Cost 1,686/yr.
  • Total C02 Emissions 74,592 lbs C02/yr.
  • 0.22 W/ft2

6
Reduction in Energy Using E-Star
  • 70 reduction in kWh/yr.
  • 3,123/yr reduction in energy costs.
  • 70 reduction in C02/yr output.
  • 54 reduction in W/ft2

Facts about the Energy Star Program
  • Energy Star Equipment has the same initial cost
    as non-Energy Star Equipment.
  • Most everything today is made Energy Star
    compliant.
  • Only 50 of printers are Energy Star because the
requirements are too low for high speed printers.
However, in 2000 the EPA will release new
requirements that will allow most printers to
    become Energy Star.

9
More Facts about E-Star
  • If over the next 15 years, all products bought
were Energy Star compliant, the U.S. could shrink
their energy bills by 100 Billion, dramatically
    cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
  • If all equipment was Energy Star compliant by the
year 2010, the annual pollution reduction would
be equivalent to removing 6.5 million cars from
    the road.
