• Shermans plan to march
• Started in Atlanta finished by the sea

September 2, 1864 - December 20, 1864

• William Tecumseh Sherman led his men on a 400
  mile journey.
• Employed a major war tactic called total
  warfare.

Total Warfare

• Destruction of the army and its resources.
• Soldiers destroyed everything in their path,
  killing all civilians, burning all houses and
  other structures

Pillaging

• Left all of their supplies behind to lessen load
  of men.
• Relied on what they found for survival.
• Destroyed all but things that could help them.
  (I.E. ammo) see picture

Devastation

• Troops would forage for food live off the land.
• Burned crops, barns, and warehouses.

Advantages of Total Warfare

• Instill fear in community.
• Destroy Southern morale.
• Destroy Confederate resources (I.E. plantations
  that yield agriculture and profits).
• Destroy Railroads-cutting off ability to send
  supplies rapidly.

• We have utterly destroyed Atlanta. I dont
  think any people would want to try and live there
  now.soldier

• Slaves greeted Sherman with joy
• White Southerners regarded Sherman as the Devil
  and his soldiers hell hounds.
• His efforts are considered a major reason for the
  Union victory in the Civil war.
