Objectives of Air Quality Monitoring Programme of
Malaysia

• To establish baseline levels for the development
  of guidelines and control policies
• To assess the adequacy and effectiveness of
  pollution control programmes
• To monitor trends in air quality for the support
  of enforcement
• To document exposure and episodes for the timely
  policy decisions on prevention
• To provide information to the public

Air Monitoring Network of Malaysia

• Air Quality Monitoring started in the late 1970s
• In April 1995 ASMA secured a 20 years concession
  for the privatization of the air and water
  quality monitoring and assessment
• This included the National Environmental Data
  Centre
• The air network has 51 monitoring stations which
  are linked via public telephone lines to the
  Environmental Data Centre (EDC)

• 44 stations in the network are ambient stations
• (a) Background
• (b) Residential
• (c) Industrial
• (d) Traffic
• 7 stations are PM10 only stations

Air Monitoring Network of Malaysia

• The continuous air quality monitoring (CAQM)
  stations are equipped with continuous automatic
  analyzers for sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides,
  carbon monoxide, ozone, particulate matter (PM10)
  and hydrocarbon
• The stations are also equipped with
  meteorological parameters like wind speed and
  direction, temperature, UV(B) and relative
  humidity

• The EDC is equipped with a sophisticated computer
  system which automatically dials up the 51 CAQM
  stations every hour for an immediate update of
  air quality data collected at the stations
• The computer system is equipped with an
  application software which can be used to give an
  accurate overview of the air quality using
  reports and graphs

• The fundamental objective of the Quality
  Assurance\ Quality Control program is to provide
  reliable data for accurate assessment of air
  quality for the development of control strategies
  by relevant authorities.
• Three major stages are involved to provide the
  data in its final form
• Field calibration of the monitoring equipment.
• Validation of the field data.
• Final quality check.
