What have we done so far?
  • Started at the end where do we want to get to?
  • Criteria for evaluating models

5
Criteria for evaluating models
  • Should maximise benefits of psychology to society
  • Should be inclusive of large numbers of
    psychology graduates
  • Should represent unified approach to applied
    psychology in health social care
  • Should not undermine quality maintain standards
    of clinical governance
  • Should equip trainees with different levels of
    competence within a developmental framework
    integrated into service delivery model
  • Should be inclusive of diversity

6
Next steps
  • Looked at what we have already trying to
understand more about where we come from
  • Conclusion
  • A multiplicity of training models across the
    applied psychologies, moulded by historical
    developments, professional frameworks and service
    structures not necessarily client need

7
Breaking out of the box
  • Finding some overlaps across the applied
    psychologies
  • Involvement in psychology undergraduate syllabus
  • Models of training that have already started to
    break out of the box

8
Blue sky thinking
  • Developing some alternative models
  • Starting to play with these
  • Evaluating against the criteria
  • Feasibility if there is a will there is a way?

9
A vision one coherent model
  • A pyramidal model with a variety of psychology
graduate roles at the base and the consultant
    psychologist at the apex
  • Facilitation of upward movement
  • Increased emphasis on supervision with higher
    levels in pyramid
  • Training grades actively and structurally
    involved in service provision
  • Placement constraints mitigated by integrated
    supervised service model (cf medicine)
