Physical lay-out features
  • Located just opposite to Net-lab, easy/secured
    access.
  • 386 SqFt, entire space used as machine room
  • Hosts Liebert cooler air-condition calculation
    depicted in later slides
  • Hosts DC centralized power supply rack
  • AC circuit outlets breaker panels provided at
    required points
  • Hosts 12 telecom standard racks with cable
    manager.
  • Hosts cable trays (for overhead power/network
    drops)
  • Condensation/humidity factors taken into account
  • False ceiling provided along with air-vents at
    appropriate places
  • Raised floor not desired to conserve space/cost.
  • 1GE Out-of-band uplink connection provided by IST
department via overhead network drop we plan to
    use an aggregation switch downstream.

  • TOTAL 50KW connected load

10
Power distribution features
  • Capable of handling 50KW of connected load.
  • Centralized DC supply (-48v for ONS 13 units)
being provided by contractor, with battery bank,
    in a single isolated rack.
  • DC cabling done by contractor upto the ONS units
    using overhead cable drops.
  • AC supply (208240V for Cisco7613 4 units) being
    provided by Caltech Electrical department.
  • AC supply (110V for 30 servers) being provided by
    Caltech Electrical department.
  • AC power drops provided direct from points at
    appropriate places using overhead drops.
  • AC circuit breakers provided at centralized
    location.
  • UPS systems (with built-in isolation
transformers) provide a backup of 10minutes for
    all units shall be provided.

11
Cooling Requirements
  • Formula used
  • Watts x (0.860)Kcal/hour Watts x
    (3.414)Btu/hour Btu/hour divided by 12,000tons
    of refrigeration required
  • So, for the connected load of 50KW amount of
    cooling required is
  • 50000 x 3.414 170700 Btu/hour

    170700/12000 14.225 tons of cooling
    required.
  • The Liebert cooling system is capable of
providing a lot more than the above requirement.

Rack Cable distribution
13
Rack Cable distribution features
  • Telecom standard racks are used Diemensions
    ??x??x??
  • ONS series (13 units) will go into racks 2 to 6.
-48v power drops will be provided by the
    centralized DC supply.
  • 7613 series (4 units) will go into racks 1 7.
240V AC power drops will be provided from points
that are located at appropriate places.
  • 1U rack-mount servers will go into racks 8 9.
  • There is lot of room to add more racks in the
    future.
  • Each rack has a cable management panel.
  • Overhead cable trays are used to carry power
drops and network/console cable drops seperately.
  • Console ports for all these units are connected
    using TIP/Terminal servers.
  • Management (OutOfBand) ports are connected to an
aggregation switch and the uplink of 1GE is
    provided by IST department.
  • Fiber spool storage spaces are available in the
    racks itself.
  • Connection to external networks (fiber drops)
like CACR/HEP is extended from the next building
    into this facility.
