Reactive Furniture
2
Interactive Chair
  • Interactive chair that is able to detect when
    someone is approaching it.
  • Chair senses when it is moved by a user.
  • Chair reacts to user, giving visual feedback.

3
Inspiration
  • METAPLAY
  • Myron W. Kruger.
  • An installation where participants could interact
    with their environment.
  • Artist could track the movement of the person in
    the space.
  • Drawings would appear on the walls in relation to
    the participants.

Participant interacting with the installation
space and the artist.
4
Inspiration
  • MITs Media Lab, The Magic Carpet.
  • Pressure sensitive carpet and motion sensor
    installation.
  • Stimuli create video clips of sonic mappings.
  • The lower tones are generated by foot position.
The higher sounds are generated by upper body
    movement.

5
Inspiration
Brno Chair, Mies van der Rohe
Le Corbusier Club Chair, Le Corbusier
Molded Plywood Lounge Chair, Eames
B 40 Chair, Marcel Breuer
6
Compass Sensor
  • Digital Compass reads a 360 degrees radius of
    movement.
  • Allows chair to know when it has been moved.
  • Allows user to move chair and receive visual
    feedback

7
Pressure Sensor
  • Carbon impregnated conductive foam.
  • Integrated into the seat of the chair to create a
    pressure sensor.
  • Enables the chair to know when someone is seated,
and when they are shifting their weight.

8
IR Sensor
  • Infrared sensor can detect movement when the
    wavelengths it emits are broken.
  • Enables the chair to know when a user is
    approaching.

Future Possibilities
  • Could be incorporated into ergonomic office
    furniture.
  • User would receive notification from a sensor
that they are not sitting correctly.
  • Could produce a peaceful or calming sound when
    user is sitting properly.
  • Incorporating responsive elements into buildings.
  • Space would be aware of people and their
    locations.
  • People would be able to have a running dialogue
with a space they enter on a daily basis.

Ergonomics Design factors, intended to
maximize productivity by minimizing operator
fatigue and discomfort.
