TIA CRD CHARTER
  • Ensure the U.S. communications sector continues
    to be a world leader in advanced research.
  • Provide expert advice to the government and to
    the TIA on the status and impact of research and
    technology to the communications industry.
  • Educate the public on the importance of
    communications research as a foundation for the
    communications products and services on which
    they depend.

  • Targeted funding for communications-specific,
    basic research in USG agency budgets
  • Authorizations and appropriations in legislation
  • Creation of funding/advisory boards to coordinate
    comm-specific, basic research in the federal
    government

  • Updated division whitepaper with new statistics
    and graphs
  • Created one page marketing document

Recent Accomplishments
  • Wrote and submitted comments for the National
    Science Foundations next strategic plan, January
  • TIA was invited to the White House to view State
    of the Union and American Competitiveness
    Initiative (ACI) announcement, January 31
  • Created opportunity for CRD chief technology
    officers to apply for positions on the Technical
    Advisory Group (TAG) of the Presidents Council
    of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST). At
    least 2 CRD member companies were accepted.
  • As a result of TIAs request to NITRD, the
    division began working with NITRD to plan Fall,
    2006 government/industry conference on networking
    architectures and network security

Recent Accomplishments
  • Participated in Congressional Visit Days, along
    with more than 40 other companies and
    organizations, to advocate more federal funding
    for basic research in the physical sciences,
    March 28-29
  • CRD Chairman, Adam Drobot, testified before
    Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Technology,
    Innovation Competitiveness about importance of
    basic research for U.S. competitiveness, March 29
  • Invited to President Bush speech in Rockville, MD
    about ACI and brought 3 member companies, April
    18

Recent Accomplishments
  • Asked to participate in elite group of DC-based
    trade associations to work directly with White
    House to implement the ACI
  • Met with about 50 Congressional offices to
    introduce CRD and its priorities and advocate on
    behalf of FY2007 ACI funding
  • Increased TIA member participation in the
    division by 20
  • Conducted meetings and outreach calls to TIA
    members to encourage participation in the CRD
  • Developing marketing materials for use with TIA
    member companies and non-members, explaining CRD
    and its mission

Next Steps
  • Execute CRD activities at GLOBALCOMM 2006,
    including CRD business meeting (June 4), panel
    discussion (June 5) and press conference (June 5)
  • Continue working with NITRD representatives on
    Fall, 2006 conference
  • Advocate in support of funding the Presidents
    FY2007 budget and ACI priorities that benefit TIA
    members
  • Advocate for extension and permanency of RD tax
    credit
  • Get more TIA members involved in the division

  • Discuss outreach strategy for education
  • Continue meeting with all offices of House and
    Senate appropriations committee members
  • Continue meeting with congressional members of
    other key committees, and RD tax credit
    supporters
  • Continue meeting with relevant federal agencies
  • Continue to work with other associations and
    coalitions to further TIA goals
