Emotions at Birth
  • During the first month Emotions are limited to
Pleasure or satisfaction during which baby is
    quiet
  • Pain or discomfort during which a baby cries
  • Crying may also indicate boredom or some other
    form of discomfort

5
Babies gradually develop different Pleasant
Emotions
  • At 2 months babies show delight by smiling
  • By 8 months babies show elation!
  • By 8 or 9 months babies begin to feel affection
for those who provide security and care

6
Unpleasant Emotions
  • Very young babies express discomfort or
    unhappiness in the same waycrying!
  • Bt 4 or 5 months, babies show anger when they
    dont get their own way.
  • Older babies show anger at objects as well as
people. They may throw their toys or push
    something away.
  • Until the age of 6 months, babies do not show
fear because they do not recognize threatening
    situations.
  • Fear of strangers begins at about 8 months of age.

7
Emotional development depends on
  • A childs individuality
  • The type of care the baby receives
  • The atmosphere of the home

8
Building Trust!
  • The attitude newborns develop about their world
depends upon how well their needs were met!
  • Being consistent in care and responses to keep
baby warm, dry, fed, soothed when fussy and
talked to when awake gives a sense of security.
  • A newborn made to conform to rigid schedules or
inconsistent care ( sometimes gentle and loving
sharp and impatient) learns the world is
    unfriendly

9
Emotional Climate of the Home
  • Affection and harmony between parents, caregivers
and all family members are the foundation of
    successful family life.
  • Each child needs love and understanding as an
    individual.
  • A baby who senses the tone of adult feelings such
as nervous or worried in turn becomes irritable
    and fussy.
  • It is essential for a baby to feel genuine
    affection and caring!
