AIReC experience

• All CNs in AIReC are based on the same
  principles
• No simple City Web
• Accessibility (by modem and by ISP)
• Citizens certification (and recognition)
• Local netiquette
• Interactivity and participation

• A standard Web Site (Cremona)
• A standard Web Site powered by a Lotus Notes
  server (Mantova)
• Web Sites powered by a Community Server (CS)
  based on BBS technology (FirstClass)
• Pure BBS Servers

In standard Web Site CNs

• We observe that
• Participation in local discussion groups is lower
• less discussion groups and
• less messages posted (in general)
• Conferencing is very poorly integrated with other
  pages

Overcome BBS approach

• Out of the Internet standards
• In conferencing systems users get information in
  the same way they put them, i.e. by messages
• good for writers/producers
• not for readers/consumers

BBS can enhance Web

• What should we like to preserve of the BBS style?
• the greater interactivity and the lower
  broadcasting
• the ability of a bottom-up growth
• citizens can be content provider ? designer
• no central editorial staff
• the ability to reinforce/create a local community
