24
Practice Makes Perfect!
25
Step 1 Pick a topic to speak about
  • The cluster approach should be activated
according to clear procedures involving HC,
    partners, global leads, and ERC
  • Activation procedures are overly bureaucratic,
the cluster approach must be field-driven
  • The cluster approach shouldnt need to be
activated at all it should be the standard of
    how we work together
  • If my agency is to be held accountable by the HC,
then NGOs in my cluster must be accountable to
    me.
  • If the HC role is to be strengthened and taken
seriously, then cluster leads must be accountable
    to them.
  • The UN uses the cluster approach to get more
money, at the expense of NGOs.
  • The cluster approach is about raising the
standards of how we work together, in all
    emergencies.

26
Step 2 Prepare talking points
Take a minute to think about the points or
argument you want to make. Write the name of your
issue on a sheet of paper e.g. 1. Clear
procedures needed to activate cluster
27
Step 3 Form Triads
Find two partners who have a different opinion or
a different issue.
28
Step 4 one Speaker one Listener
Speaks-gives opinion
Paraphrase questions
5 minutes
  • Speaker speaks, gives opinion
  • Listener LISTENS, paraphrases, draws the speaker
out using probing questions. At the end of
five minutes the listener summarizes the main
    points
  • Observer observe after summary gives feedback
    on active listening.

29
Step 5 Active Listening Practice
  • Listener cannot take notes, use ears only.
  • Start when facilitator says BEGIN
  • Stop when facilitator calls STOP. Listener
then summarizes main points and speaker validates
    the summary.
  • Observer provides feedback on active listening
    skills.
  • Repeat 2 above Switch Roles.

30
Active Listening Debrief
  • What helped or hindered active listening?
  • When you were the speaker did you feel the
person was listening? How do you know?
  • What non-verbal cues were used to aid active
    listening?

31
